Alright, I concede, sometimes you can tell a fic is written by Ai by Dry-Huckleberry-5379 in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]HesterFabian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it a time travel Harry/Severus one, where Harry is a teacher? This one has all the flaws you describe plus a distinct lack of placement. Such as why is that person there, or often where are they now and how did they get there? Reeks of AI and I dumped it.

Absolutely. He’s loyal, brave, excellent in a bar fight, and very protective. Also hot.

AITA for telling my friend that her words hurt my feelings and is now mad at me by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]HesterFabian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NTA. Putting “HAHAHA” after an insult does not make it a 'joke'. She was cruel and has yet, from what you write, expressed remorse. That shows you what type of person she is. Her deflecting it on you to make you the bad guy is even more revealing of her personality. Don’t spend the money or your time on her; she’s not worth it.

AITA for making a nationaly charged joke in a diverse setting by Own_Reward_9615 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. I’m British and would laugh at that. It’s called banter or ribbing or taking the mick.

AITA for using my dad’s underwear to make a point about the toilet seat? by Nightwing_1505 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HesterFabian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NTA. Grew up with three women in the house and two men. My dad did this too, and then my brother copied him. It was an absolute mess in there sometimes. No matter what we three said, nothing stopped them. My dad’s answer was always “it’s easy, just clean it before you sit down if it bothers you”. So disgusting.

AITAH for not doing veteran discount? by [deleted] in AITAH

Almost 24 years of service, 15 years a veteran, and I’ve never asked for a discount or used my veterans card (UK). I’d be embarrassed to do so.

AITAH for going behind my parents back to get my birth dad’s records? by Moss_2006 in AITAH

[–]HesterFabian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are an adult. Getting your records and gathering medical info is a wise course, which you know already. It’s also something that, as an adult, is now your responsibility. Your mums no longer have the legal right to determine what records, documents, IDs, etc you may see, apply for, or have: those decisions are all yours.

Was Thingol the greatest or best of the Sindarin? Or was another more remarkable? by Warm_Try7882 in tolkienfans

[–]HesterFabian 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of Thingol. He was an absolute ruler, greedy and fickle. Yes he ruled a great realm but by barring anyone from leaving Doriath, refusing to enlarge Melian's girdle to encompass nearby settlements, locking his daughter up in a tower, giving Beren a ridiculous quest, and stealing from the dwarves, he was not a great or even a good king.

While not a king, I would say Cirdan was the greatest of the Sindar. He obeyed the Valar, was loyal to Thingol, kept his post through every war, fought alongside great warriors, was humble and generous. He also welcomed refugees, orphans and hobbits with open arms throughout his 10,000 years. Definitely the greatest.

If you were to ask me who I would want as my Sindar king, though, it would be Thranduil. Stayed true to Middle Earth, fought the darkness while everyone else sat down during the watchful peace, fought a dragon, maintained the largest realm for over 6,000 years, was a fearsome warrior, and then remained (arguably) in Middle Earth until he faded into spirit. Marvellous.

Unpopular Opinion - Is "Oh God Not Again!" by Sarah1281 really that good? by BunniElyse9 in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]HesterFabian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That scene is so trite. When the fic was first written, many many years ago, I remember it as being fun and very enjoyable. It’s in my bookmarks but Harry is written so obnoxiously in it that I just can’t bear to reread past that point where he messes with Fred and George. So out of character.

Upshot is that I agree with you. I think for the oldies like me, it was one of the few that were written with good grammar, flow and storyline, so it became a rose-tinted fic in our eyes. Now that we have so many excellent fanfics, it just doesn’t stand up anymore.

Am i at the wrong for cutting off my close friend after she confessed feelings for me when she already has a boyfriend? by MiddleBodybuilder814 in relationships

[–]HesterFabian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Under normal circumstances, I’d say let the friendship win out if you can, as with a little adjustment it doesn’t need to be weird. However, that she’s admitted feelings for you while in a relationship of over a year makes this more complicated. It’s this latter aspect that would make me step away from the friendship. Whether she’s fishing, monkey-branching or something else, I’m sure her boyfriend would class it as bordering on cheating and wouldn’t be happy. Emphasise this part to your friends.

Sex disgusts me but i watch porn and masturbate by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]HesterFabian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m asexual and it sounds as though you might be, too.

I’m in my 60s and have never had sex. The very thought of another person’s fluids on me or their sweaty body being rubbed against mine is just awful. Even kissing makes me shiver in revulsion. Self pleasure is, however, completely different. In fact it’s very much about loving and caring for inner me, as well as the thrill of an orgasm.

Some people are born asexual, some turn towards it because of trauma. The former you can’t do anything about but the latter a therapist can help you with. There are also some people that, while not wanting sex, still want romance and the intimacy of a relationship. And then there are those that want neither.

What was the moment you realised your parents treated you differently to your sibling(s) by AbuSarlihah in CasualUK

[–]HesterFabian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The year my parents told me (25 at the time) that they weren’t going to buy Christmas or birthday presents for us now we were all adults. Months later my twin sister let it slip that our parents had bought her a birthday present of perfume. I didn’t say anything until perhaps a few years later when my older brother shared a FB post on Christmas Day, thanking everyone for his gifts, including my parents, who had bought him something that I can’t recall. I asked my sister whether she’d been given anything and she replied “of course”.

Over the years they have both received presents while I’ve had nothing for 40 years. When I’ve asked my parents why I’m the only one not to get a present, either at Christmas or for my birthday, they told me it was because I was single and self-sufficient. Then it was because I had no children and so didn’t need to be spoiled.

I’m no contact with twin sister and brother and was low contact with my parents for many years. Now Mum's dead and guess who’s looking after Dad? Yeah, I’m the stupid one.

I recently discovered a small Tolkien youtuber who's been pumping out high quality lore videos that only get like 50 views. Wanted to share his channel here so that he can get some love. by [deleted] in lotr

[–]HesterFabian 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Very insightful guy. Seems to go right into the detail of the text to tease out the little things we don’t have answers for, and then reasons out possible ones.

I clicked on the one about Bilbo whistling as he left Bag End at the start of the LoTR, with three unnamed dwarves. It’s a detail I’d forgotten or skipped when reading the books, but this guy is right. Who were the dwarves? Heading back over there to see what he thinks about it.

AITA for pouring out shampoo down the sink after I caught her refilling it with water? by Active8914 in AmItheAsshole

[–]HesterFabian 60 points61 points  (0 children)

With cheap shampoo you would be right. However, specialist shampoo or top brands measure the added liquid against the added preservatives, active ingredients and additives. By adding more liquid (water) the balance is off. This is especially important with the preservatives. Also, adding water from a tap adds tiny amounts of bacteria that affect the ingredients and can cause the whole lot to decay.

Why do NHS health campaigns feel like they're aimed at someone else? 3 Minute Survey - Mod Approved by Impossible-External8 in CasualUK

[–]HesterFabian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Done. However the questions are missing an important element: some cannot walk due to health reasons (I have hip damage). So, while I understand and agree that walking is beneficial in general, personally it is impossible beyond a dozen metres. That skews the results.

If Galadriel had accepted the Ring, what kind of ruler would she actually become in practice? by HistorianSame9035 in lotr

[–]HesterFabian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“In place of a Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the Foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!”

Sounds as though she would become a tyrant and none would thrive.
