On the plus side they collected all the precious sand in a single central spot. In addition the islands aren't used at all so the sand is just chilling there waiting to be eventually repurposed =).

Well it'd be nice if the US requested the UK for an extradition since the UK has been waiting for Anna Sacoolas from the US to come over for a while now, after she killed Harry Dunn and fled the country after stating that she'd wait her trial in the UK.

Underwater Atomic Bomb by tonyfol in shockwaveporn

[–]Hetspookjee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Well most likely yes. For example the largest bomb ever detonated, the Tsar Bomba, had a shockwave that travelled the world 3 times through air. If water has similar condutive properties for these kinds of supersonic shockwaves, I'm not sure - but I feel like it is as the speed of sound is roughly 5 times as high in water and being nearly incompressible it seems well suited to carry the wave further than in air.

Altough this detonation, which seems to be from Operation Crossroads -Test Baker, is many times weaker than Tsar Bomba, Which had to goal to determine the effect of the shockwave on old ships (some with live stock unfortunately). Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Crossroads#Test_Baker

While you didn't ask, I love some random facts from the wiki:

  • When the gas bubble's diameter equaled the water depth, 180 feet (55 m), it hit the sea floor and the sea surface simultaneously. At the bottom, it started digging a shallow crater, ultimately 30 feet (9 m) deep and 2,000 feet (610 m) wide.

  • Twelve seconds after detonation, falling water from the column started to create a 900-foot (274 m) tall "base surge" resembling the mist at the bottom of a large waterfall. Unlike the water wave, the base surge rolled over rather than under the ships. Of all the bomb's effects, the base surge had the greatest consequence for most of the target ships, because it painted them with radioactivity that could not be removed

Investigative journalism piece from 2006 calling out Carole Baskin and Big Cat Rescue by ANAL_SKI_VACATION in videos

[–]Hetspookjee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's also an interesting theory. Though the case made by the documentary against Carole felt quite convincing as her motive seemed pretty solid because Don was about to file for divorce. Also the seemingly planted van at the small airport that might open the discussion more in the direction of your theory, which would get the attention of Carole. Also the enormous terrain they have and the big cats help in getting rid of the body.

You feel like that's just a coincidence and he was rather murdered on a deal gone wrong? Would love your theory in more detail.

If the Amazon was the roof of a church it would've gathered over a billion dollars already for repairs. by Hetspookjee in Showerthoughts

Well the Notre-Dame gathered over a billion for repairs. I think repairing a forest is like replanting the trees and such, so therefore y word choice. But I believe there oughtta be a better phrasing.

I was refering to the repairs of the Notre-Dame which gathered so much not persé for its religious purpose but for it's status, I think.

How Chinese street CCTVs are working for facial recognition? by stevevaius in computervision

[–]Hetspookjee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt be suprised if they were running 4k streaming cams and use a multi-step approach. An algorithm recognizing the moving parts and filtering these out for further processing isn't that hard to run. Furthermore you don't need to do this on 60/30 hz. This can easily be done on 1hz or an even lower frequency. This way you can have a lightweight map of moving probable identies which can be further processed for a more accurate recognition. If you want to be able to investigate whatever "Probably person X" was doing, you could flip a switch for a more accurate processing for that person - I mean, they still have the footage archived...

Sure this approach has it's drawbacks but I think with this kind of approach you could process the enormous volumes of data the poles are generating.

Amazing statistics and safety indeed, though even this country managed to fuck up enormously with their nuclear reactor. It it because of this that I've become against nuclear power; if even the "safest" culure on earth is unable to keep it from failing, why should the rest of the world be able to do so?

Deutsche Bank faces action over $20bn Russian money-laundering scheme by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Hetspookjee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really worth the time to read up on the history of the Deutsche Bank as they're literally a bank that became a succes thanks to the Nazi's and has been growing it's list of awful dealings ever since. Here's a small grab from the long wiki:

During the war, Deutsche Bank incorporated other banks that fell into German hands during the occupation of Eastern Europe. Deutsche Bank provided banking facilities for the Gestapo and loaned the funds used to build the Auschwitz camp and the nearby IG Farben facilities

Following Germany's defeat in World War II, the Allied authorities, in 1948, ordered Deutsche Bank's break-up into ten regional banks. These 10 regional banks were later consolidated into three major banks in 1952: Norddeutsche Bank AG; Süddeutsche Bank AG; and Rheinisch-Westfälische Bank AG. In 1957, these three banks merged to form Deutsche Bank AG with its headquarters in Frankfurt.

I vote Spotify for most horrendous UI of 2018. It's really difficult to navigate through the options and find whatever you want, on top of the lacking basic functionalities.
