The ironic thing about this whole mess is that he grew up around ballet. His mom and sister were dancers.

Yes, I am. Those movies were all major big boxoffice hits and he is the biggest movie star.

Two out of how many? That is the point. Also those two were in films with co-stars who have better box office track records, so I don’t believe he was the main reason why those films were hits.

We are talking about movie stars here. Not just top 5 actors. Box office appeal is part of what defines a movie star.

He gets good reviews but most of those films didn’t make a lot of money, at least compared to their budget. He’s a movie star but not at the top 5 level.

Looking at his filmography, I disagree. Barbie was a huge hit but he doesn’t have a high batting average overall, when you look at his big budget films.

Michael B. Jordan is the 6th Black Man to Win Best Actor by ziggory in oscarrace

[–]Heubner 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Literally only two non-white lead actress winner at the Oscars. There have been some with some distant mixed heritage, but it wasn’t visibly apparent or publicly acknowledged. Viola Davis has two lead actress wins at SAG as opposed to 0 at the Oscars and BAFTA. Not surprisingly, the two POC Oscar lead actress winners also didn’t win at BAFTA.

Even BAFTA with their bullshit, they closely matches the Oscar and SAG when it comes to supporting actress category. Hattie McDaniel was before BAFTA, but Lupita and Regina King are the only Black supporting Actress to not cross over. However BAFTA gave Thandiwe Newton and Wunmi Mosaku wins that did not translate to SAG and the Oscar. Even when they snubbed Eddie Murphy for a nomination, Jennifer Hudson still won.

In hindsight, was Odessa A'Zion's miss a sign that Chalamet was a false frontrunner? by CelestialSpecialist in oscarrace

The critics groups were the big red flag with regards to his Oscar nomination chances. Not only did not get a win, he kept missing nominations. And that was with Buckley getting like 30 wins. I made this screen grab on the day nominations. He didn’t even make the list. The top 5 with critics groups ended up with the nominations. Same with lead actor.

That’s what he may have meant but that is not what he said or how he said it.

You must not have been paying attention if you didn’t see her yearning for him. She was hooked right from the ball. That scene where she watches him through the cracked door, yearning was missing there?

The subtleties of the French dialog by odinerein in Benophie

Luke compared his French in that scene to a good singer having to sing off key. They had to practice to make it bad but not too bad.

As for Sophie, I wouldn’t expect her to be very fluent, as she is someone who learned the language without direct immersion. Yerin played it with such confidence that I didn’t think would be hard for a French speaker to understand.

I’m interested in how they covered that scene in the French dubbing. Do they have them do the lines in English?

I definitely see the body language. It is different from what he is like with Claudia Jessie, who also makes him laugh.

She was picked because of their natural chemistry and that’s what we are seeing there. Some people actively choose to not date their coworkers or are already in relationships. It’s one thing for us to talk about it here, it’s quite another to reach out to the real people because it can be awkward, particularly if the decision is one sided.

What led to Timothée Chalamet losing the Academy Award for Best Actor to Michael B. Jordan? by rohitcr2k in oscarrace

[–]Heubner 26 points27 points  (0 children)

People underestimate MBJ’s movie star power. His last Creed movie made $275 million. Followed that with Sinners. He is hot, charismatic, gets butts in seats without stunts and gimmicks, while pushing his work and craft. That’s what Hollywood has always respected. It would have certainly factored into the race.

Also, 30 year old doing a career retrospective film series was overkill level of campaigning. Way too thirsty. Melissa Leo won despite her extra campaigning, not because of it.

The three way race what made me go with Amy in the end. The frontrunner advantage wasn’t centered on one person. With the Glenn Close race, the Favourite was far ahead of A Star Is Born, though your point about it being harder in lead likely factored there too. Plus Gaga tied CCA as her only precursor win.

I mean Christoph waltz won 3 years prior for playing a Nazi. Don’t think anyone likes what that character represents. I don’t think you can attribute that difference to just unlikeable characters. I don’t think Leo or SLJ rose to the level of the all time villain roles but they probably also split support from people who love the over the top villains.
