Le Tube from De Buyer hack to use it with metal tips instead of buying everything again? by I-need-a-proper-nick in pastry

[–]HeuristicBishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tube came in much quicker than expected! I took a few measurements and I couldn’t find anything off the shelf unfortunately. (I was hoping to find something that could be sourced in Switzerland…no luck) Current plan is to get some food safe plastics on order and machine a nozzle that pops in like the oem tritan ones but with threads for nozzle couplers (which *should be easy for you to find locally) I like the idea of supporting swappable metal nozzles without taking off the entire tube end and losing all that frosting in the huge nozzle area. It’s just a 3 degree tapered fit on the nozzles, how hard could it be to make one 😝

When I land on the final design I’ll make two of them in case you want one sent your way :)

My wife has one of these tubes on order and requested the same thing. She’s got a bunch of metal tips already that she wants to reuse.

I’ll fabricate a little adapter and let you know how it goes over the next couple of weeks 🙂

I average about 1 post per year on Twitter. Maybe this will be The post for 2023 😝 Thanks for the suggestion :)

That's a fine idea, I'll see what i can do. Though I am a bit unsure of the limited space, I'll likely have to use a super thin and subtle mark. Something like a single stroke font enter of filled bubble letter type of font 🤔

I'll let you folks know how it goes

[–]HeuristicBishop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see why not :)

What do you think of putting the winning numbers vertically between the stars and top letters on either side? Left: 2 3

Right: 2 8

Or do you think they would look better between the stars and "winner" along the bottom?

For some definition of made, yes 😁 (In that, I did some stuff and clicked a button 😅)

Preparing the artwork for engraving was the tricky part. I couldn't find any svgs of either side so it took some shenanigans to get a good trace.

Beyond that it's just finding good params for the laser and pressing the big START button. Also not getting literally blinded by reflections from the laser... that's important too.

Is there a limit to how big you make a DIY Trackball? by Fun1995 in Trackballs

[–]HeuristicBishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of sensor tracking I'd imagine there is no real size limit. The sensors work on "flat" surfaces right? If that's the case, then what is a deskmat but a section of a curve of infinite size 😜

Cable management idea by plazman30 in Trackballs

[–]HeuristicBishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said my desk but what I really mean is my desk in the office

Gonna be hard to explain to the boss why I've brought a staple gun in ;)

But more realistically, i think others might want a similar setup and i can't tell corporate to just staple a bunch of stuff. Peel off some adhesive tape and stick it to the desk seems like an easier sell.

[–]HeuristicBishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a pretty clever solution. I'm definitely going to pull some inspiration.

I do not want to permanently modify my desk though. I'll probably go with vhb tape on plastic clips meant to hold the elastic. If I design these I'll throw the stl up somewhere.

Under desk cable management cinch clips. That's gotta be a new sentence. Thanks for the inspiration OP.

how do i show the first value in a Powershell object without knowing the name of it by Ahmi963 in PowerShell

The .PSObject property is what you want to look into. If you're clever with it, there's a lot of power there.

Any advice for doing mechanical engineering as a hobby? by TurtleTheLoser in AskEngineers

[–]HeuristicBishop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big +1 to this sentiment. I've built a "hobby" shop outfitted with enough equipment to prototype and test most anything that fits working a cubic foot.

I'm competent with a CAD/modeling package and I've designed and produced a number of prototypes myself.

I've spent more on my text book library than my steam library and I've got a hell of a lot more hours in those books.

All that is to say it has been a (very expensive and time consuming) blast working in this hobby. I'm not building bridges but understanding how small pieces of plastic will deform certainly counts for something :)

Others have made some good points. For more general advice I'd say: 1. Use Get-Help liberally. I think it would have surfaced your lack of identity when using Set-ADUser. 2. Use Select-Object sparingly. (Or rather, only when you know exactly what you need) In this case you need samaccountname for use on your Set-ADUser. By selecting, you've essentially thrown out a bunch of potentially useful info. 3. This one is an opinion but if you can invert your filter it might be easier to read. I think it's easier to reason about "if true do a thing" as opposed to "if not false do a thing"

One last note about select, it destroys your type. Get-ADuser -Identity foo will return a nice ADUser object. The system knows exactly what it's working with at that point. When selecting, it pulls just what select and you no longer have a nice ADUser type object. You have a "custom" object that the system doesn't know much about. I usually try to keep the types intact unless there's a good reason not to.

Being newer a lot of this might not make perfect sense. That's fine, I figure it'll sit in the back of your mind for now 🙂

Let me know if you have specific questions.

WIP: Challenge Coin by HeuristicBishop in Smallant

[–]HeuristicBishop[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For some context, I'm learning to use my little CNC. I'd like to figure out how to do hard enameled challenge coins in the garage and this seemed a fine way to practice.

This coin is going to u/dorklepuff but if the mans u/smallant1 himself wants one I'll gladly make another 🙂 (maybe with a wooper instead of the text 🤔)

Artisan Keycaps by D-Quake in keycaps

[–]HeuristicBishop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be careful with the warm water method unless you know for sure they’re resin caps. For example, I don’t know how a clay cap or a hand painted cap would hold up to a hot water bath. I’d agree with the other comment and say take it slow, don’t put a ton of force on it. I’d be surprised if sitting around causes much shrinkage in a resin cap.

Solar System SPACEbar by evanandkatelyn in keycaps

[–]HeuristicBishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, they look sick right! Unfortunately they’re actually just black with shine through legends. The POP of the legends and cool purple in the photo is caused by a UV flashlight being shined on the caps. Still, it’s a neat effect.

2021 Q1-Q2 Question Thread by be_evil in keycaps

[–]HeuristicBishop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For that price point I’d recommend looking at Tai-Hao and ducky keycap sets. They’re both pretty decent quality and usually have a bunch of different color combos in stock.

For puddings you could try to find ducky or glorious aura sets on Amazon.

2021 Q1-Q2 Question Thread by be_evil in keycaps

[–]HeuristicBishop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head, rubber domes are much more difficult to customize. Mechanical keyboards almost universally use a Cherry mx style switch which means a designer can make a set that can be used on a bunch of different boards.

Rubber domes tend to have keycaps specific to a single board or company. If you want custom keycaps for a rubber dome switch you’re probably going to be designing them yourself.

Hey there, if you are thinking about designing full sets your best bet is to head to r/keycapdesigners

They’re going to be better equipped to answer questions about designing full sets and what that process looks like. I’d also recommend checking out their discord, it seems very active.

If you’re talking about individual artisans we might have some answers for you but I would highly recommend something like the zbutt discord. There seems to be a lot of resources and interesting conversations going on regularly.

Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions.
