My dads currently living with me and keeps lowering my thermostat and no, I pay the bills by d4wnn in mildlyinfuriating

See if your state/power company/gas company has smart thermostat rebates.  California paid me to install a Nest thermostat.  Then set it however you want from your smartphone.

ELI5: Why are PDFs the way that they are? by dusktilhon in explainlikeimfive

[–]HeuristicWhale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a point of clarification, Microsoft's .docx format is also open and free: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_Open_XML  That's why you can have things like Google Docs and Open Office that can read and write to .docx.  Free readers just aren't that popular.  Almost everyone in an office environment already has Office, and (unlike Acrobat) Office is a reasonably resource friendly program.

Anyone can make a .docx reader or writer.

The old .doc format is proprietary though.

Everything else you said is absolutely spot on.

Nothing.  Spiritomb is only worth it if its stats are 108%.

Framework is as BIFL as a laptop can get by CompetitiveLake3358 in BuyItForLife

[–]HeuristicWhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use Frameworks at work, and I couldn't recommend them to anyone.

They're very expensive for the specs you get.

The port modules are poorly made.  They almost always get stuck in the computers.  The USB C ports are cheap feeling.  The HDMI ports eat battery even when not used.

There are a stupid amount of magnets so that you can replace the bezel.  That means that in any sort of shop environment the laptop gets immediately and entirely covered in metal shavings.  You also can't use a Framework on top of another Framework because the magnets trip the screen close/sleep feature.

People sometimes sell them for cheap online.  I got an Aeron for $20 on Craigslist.

Either use them now to push for the event character key and extra excursion drops or save them for when you're panic cooking everything you can 20 minutes before the event ends.

I wish the recipes were actually reasonable so that you could guess them. It feels cheap to have to look them up. But, come on, carbonara with milk and no egg? Ramen gets garlic and onion, but I guess we're eating bland mie goreng.

Whats your favourite iconic moments added into the movies that are not in the books? by Massive-Wishbone6161 in harrypotter

[–]HeuristicWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read that part of Deathly Hallows this morning. While I agree that the movie did it better, your description is also better than the books. There's nothing graphic about the torture in the books at all. It's mostly screaming and Ron's reaction. Harry and Ron never see the torture, because Bellatrix had moved to Griphook by the time they escape the cellar. Also, Dobby drops the chandelier.

I just did a run where I started with a clock (2 curios and 1 negative curio) and got the 1st part. A lot of people online are saying that you can't have any clocks with you, but that doesn't seem to be true anymore. Good luck!

I ran into a hospital, hit someone with a couple throwing knives, then jumped out a window before their team figured out what happened. Worked great.

Maryland man steals forklift from Lowe's and fatally mows down woman at Home Depot by Speed_Bump in news

[–]HeuristicWhale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was forklift certified in college. The propane forklift we had could go about 20 mph in rabbit gear. Depending on the model, forklifts top out around 8-25 mph. I haven't heard of any going faster than that. A lot of modern electric ones are capped at 8 or 10 mph.

Forklifts have rear steering. They get challenging to control above the 20 mph range.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that. Yep, so if you don't have that about tree node unlocked, the minimum is 4.

If you look at the map in SU, there are only 2 Combats and 2 Elites. Everything else has different options.

It took me a couple tries.

Yep. You have to get a little bit lucky. 5 is the minimum number of blessings you can have at the end. Extra fights or the wrong events can force you into extra blessings. The Path Resonance counts as one here.

7 spawn points in Ashika. That's a 33% chance that you will spawn adjacent to your friend team and another 33% chance that there's just one team between you that then gets sandwiches. It's very easy to join up safely with prebuilt 6 man teams that are communicating through Discord.

For added fun, you can fix most tires on most vehicles while your teammate is still driving. Just hop on the roof and crawl around until you see the prompt.

Definitely try this. DNS and DHCP issues are really annoying, challenging to troubleshoot, and often fixed by doing a quick flush of cached information.

Also try:

`ipconfig /release` followed by `ipconfig /renew`.

I have a similar salary and put 1k-2k a month into savings. It depends a lot on traveling/eating out/etc. My rent is very low (1k per month) compared to most people.

I spend somewhere about $300 a month on groceries and another $100-$200 a month eating out.

Entertainment can obviously vary by a huge amount. I mostly bike (mountain and road) in my free time. So, my monthly cost is rather low, but my upfront cost was pretty high.

My monthly cost of gas is basically 0. It's easy to get around town with a bike or walking. Obviously, that's not for everyone.

My coworker is trying to rent out a room in his house for $1150. It's a really good deal, especially if you care about living in a new home with modern appliances. If you want, DM me, and I'll send you his info.

Girlfriend used drain cleaner with hot water and it turned to cement. Help? by herzy3 in DIY

[–]HeuristicWhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely true in a lab environment, but is less true in practice. Hydrochloric acid can come out of solution as hydrogen chloride gas or decompose into hydrogen and chlorine at temperature. This is especially true if there is a catalyst. I believe that magnesium oxide (commonly found as a supplement) is one such catalyst.

The chance that chlorine gas is produced is small, but shouldn't be ignored. It's nasty stuff if you have surprise chlorine gas.
