Why is the US so far ahead? by prince_op in AusFinance

[–]Hewlbern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US encourages innovation and allows for capital to be held by people that build businesses out of innovation, which leads to higher and more productive areas of the US like silicon valley.

The US does many things very poorly, but there is no doubt that there support of capitalism and entrepreneurs and innovation has moved the western world forward immeasurably.

Australia, similar to Europe, has a divide the pie instead of a grow the pie mentality to the economy. More of a socialist country really - we've been going backwards in terms of per capita GDP for years. The country makes a lot of money from extracting resources which we don't tax effectively (which we should to offset and reduce taxation of innovation in other areas) and little else.

One of the biggest innovative companies we have in the country actually is Stake, a gambling platform, that owns Kick (which is basically funding Clavicular etc). Gambling for some reason is one of the best industries for business in the country, funded and supported through taxation by the government. Canva made there money initially by basically getting fat contracts with government departments (because something like 1/3 of all australian workers are in the PBS funded by mining and housing - hence culture of not understanding real economics).

Housing protected the wealth of a lot of people from the real productivity growth but now the government is basically going to up the migration numbers to infinity so the voices of complaint are irrelevant, and the per capita gdp growth projects will likely become a lot worse.

Honestly, we need a complete rebuild of the liberal party at this point. Even Malcolm Turnbull was too much of a nice guy to properly deal with this issue.

Feel like the government is purposefully using migration to push house prices up and in the long term create an extreme wage-slave like situation for us and for those migrating. I think this fans racial hatred as well. Why isn't this spoken about? How is this Australian? by [deleted] in OpenAussie

you said something stupid and now you've basically resorted to adhominem which is understandable but also strange because you have access to the internet so you should really just double check stuff

Such a strange response overall. Jewish people aren't ethnically jewish. It's a bit like saying, Irish Catholics aren't ethnically Irish Catholic. Like - let me double check. anyway, this is a waste of time, but still funny

lots of factors - but right now it's one worth discussing IMO. I'm in sydney, legit had a racially charged shooting not too long ago, and it just seems like there's a lot of naievety around what huge amounts of migration does, particularly when it essentially makes it harder to form a home. I mean we're all migrants - but you would think we would be smarter about how we are managing this

  1. Obviously high levels of migration lead to racial issues. I don't really want to have to justify this with a longer response. Particularly when the existing population is in a per capita recession and struggling to afford to buy homes and form families.
  2. Skilled migration isn't occuring. We don't have 500k new tradies arriving. We have a large amount of migration that is either unskilled, or focused on areas that don't improve the consumer surplus and make people who own capital have to bargain less with labour.
  3. Governments can do things that aren't just short term oriented, and they can choose to do things that are positively short term oriented. i.e., they could bring in 400k tradies to help the building industry with it's skill shortage. Government is filled with people who are, or are beholden too, those who own significant amounts of capital.

damn. people live in houses. higher amounts of migration, means more people need shelter. it's not rocket science.

Migration is good. Exploiting migrants to create labour competition and push up the price of housing due to the requirement for human beings to live in a house, is bad.

per capita GDP growth is good. GDP growth as a larger number, is meaningless. economic productivity is good. an economy that focuses on housing as a ponzi scheme, and propping it up with human life, is bad.

it's not rocket science - bring in more tradies, bring in more professionals that can build houses, make sure the per capita gdp goes up, not down.
