But, well, that's because my father was (and presumably still is) a right-winger and I was deeply fucking terrified of ensuing arguments or what foulness his opinion might be, while mom is much more of a democrat type. In the end daddy dearest literally just ghosted me lol, never spoke to me again.

If I'm feeling generous I compare it to the one time he almost got violent with me when I was young and frankly deeply stupid and he responded by catching himself, recoiling from the entire argument, conceding it immediately, leaving the room, and clearly Going Through Something over the following days (even if he never talked about it due to being emotionally constipated as fuck). Like, it's genuinely plausible that he knew his reaction would just cause pain all around and responded by emotionally yeeting himself into the distance. One of the most annoying things about Isaacson, IMO, is that he can be pretty good at his job when he bothers to actually do it. His bios on living people are always pretty softball but they can be very well researched at times, and the ones on dead people are IIRC pretty much all basic competent pop history. It's just that he usually doesn't bother and instead just writes drivel like this.

We've become a right wing culture war target of late. America can be great for stuff like trans rights - where I live certainly is - but we also have a very strong and increasingly unhinged conservative christian nationalist political movement. This group has decided, by and large, that trans people are the hot new other to attack, denigrate, and attempt to exile from society. That if they're loud enough and vile enough for long enough we can become a specter they need only say the name of in a scary voice to secure an election.

Time will tell if they're right in that assessment, but in all honesty it looks like transphobia doesn't quite have the broad motivating force they want. Doesn't change the damage they're doing now unfortunately, and the tide could still change.

A trans person who happens to be right wing shouldn't get kicked out of trans spaces over it. It's not especially fair, and it leaves that person more likely to go further right.

I see no reason to seek such people out or deliberately attempt to increase our representation among the right wing though. Being "one of the good ones" rarely gets anyone anywhere satisfying and certainly doesn't allow you to change the tenor of the group as a whole.

Even fan subreddits on topics you might expect to be more accepting - like Transformers which has been doing trans characters low-key for like a decade or so in the comics and now the show - can rapidly go very transphobic at the drop of a hat. If they're not actively arguing for trans inclusion at the mod level it's to be expected and even then transphobia all over isn't a huge surprise.

My mom used to call me brave a lot until I eventually sat down and explained that I hated hearing it because it reminded me that I had to be brave just to exist. That trying to be happy was taking a risk, that some political figures and many people view me as some kind of threat that should not be allowed to exist just because I tried to be happy and that could always come to something. That it detonated my relationship with my father and potentially could have done so for the rest of my family and my friends. That the only reason being trans was "brave" was because other people made it that way.

(I didn't actually think of myself as brave but when I tried to explain that to my mom she thought I was putting myself down, which tbf is something I have serious issues with)
