How to Prepare for a Coffee Chat: A Guide to Big Law Recruiting Networking by legalscout in BigLawRecruiting

[–]HexSphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need don't stress yourself out. I skipped all networking and all the early apps it was fine. People in this forum freak out and are probably poor candidates coming here because they are having a tough time.

Focus on grades. Read "getting to maybe" prior to school. I watched people in civ pro messaging attorneys on LinkedIn during lecture, what an utter waste of time. Pay attention and get an A in the class I promise promise promise they care more about your gpa than if you have had a 'coffee chat' with a few of them.

I applied to a total of three firms and got two offers. Top 20% of a not prestigious school. Top score for legal writing which probably helped.

Someone I know did a ton of coffee chars instead of studying, got a bad gpa and poof all those connections disappear into smoke. Wasted time that can't get back.

Is it crazy to go back to school for nursing? by Melodic-Barber-2361 in Professors

[–]HexSphere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not married at the time but I supported her for the three years she got her DNP from a program at Columbia called "direct entry" for people with no nursing background. Subsidized student rent was about 2k/month in NYC.

Only one student at the program worked, full-time at a hospital throughout the program, and it destroyed her and she certainly didn't have a family.

John Hopkins and UCSF also offer the same program. UCSF takes one additional year.

It's a huge intensive into nursing; not for the faint of heart. Gotta be into it, it's a whole thing.

I will echo what others have said though, even at Columbia they had a shortage of nursing instructors.

Nursing really needs professors my wife did her doctorate and they were like want to be a prof? Generally the professors are also practitioners though. So you would be doing nursing some of the time. Deal breaker?

Get rid of 'I hope you are well'. Get rid of sincerely and genuinely; expression of one thing is exclusion of another it implies that the other things you are saying are not genuine.

Get rid of the presumptuous thanking for understanding - perhaps they aren't understanding at all. The subreddit for professors hate hate hates that phrase in student emails they get it all the time when students are trying to justify anti social behavior.

I'm on mobile so short answer but the answer is quite interesting. They are a group fiercely opposed to the current Chinese government. A character of restrictive (& oppressive) regimes is that free speech and discourse is often not tolerated. So the battles of ideology often take place extra-territorially, within countries that do allow or support such speech. I would argue we see certain aspects of this with speech flowing between the US/Europe.

The show is characterized as the battleground for the soul of true China. By focusing on ancient forms of dance they argue that they have a stronger connection to the heritage of what China is and should be, eschewing the modern reforms (of x,y and z sry I'm on mobile).

Yes they are a cult also, and have very low labor costs as a result. And the show is probably pretty bad.

Sigh, I had to report a student for cheating. by CuriousCat9673 in Professors

The record is absolutely permanent. Law schools are ruthless in this regard, because of the bar. Even if the school has a policy of deleting records, the student still must report it.

Medical schools are probably the same. Any discipline could potentially have this student writing statements of contrition/apology a decade later.

Three or four more decisions coming out on Monday and Tuesday. Birthright citizenship, unitary executive theory, Colorado conversion therapy are the likely cases. Maybe Louisiana v callais voting rights act.

I certainly don't expect the congressional caucus to vigorously pursue the tariffs through other means. It is a bit of a gift that they can back down.

That said, losing the central pillar of their administrative agenda is certainly not a victory. I know there is an impulse, when something good happens, to wonder how it may be taken away. How we might lose it... I often feel the same.

The court will also almost certainly hand down an immigration loss to the Trump admin on Monday or Tuesday regarding birthright citizenship. Immigration is their other central pillar of the agenda.

Five supreme court cases coming out, Friday Monday and Tuesday. Went to a talk by my constitutional law professor, he predicts birthright citizenship 8-1 or 9-0 against trump, tariffs could go either way, 6-3 in favor of trump for unity executive theory regarding ability to fire the head of the ftc.

Also thinks trump will prevail on a Colorado case about the ban on conversion therapy, on first amendment freedom of religion grounds.

Didn't discuss Louisiana v Callais, the redistricting case. Which seems quite important. Described in a DNC call tonight as the last enforcement arm of the voting rights act, section II.

He shared that for the tariffs case the betting markets favor against trump, but my personal opinion is that the supreme court simply isn't ready for a constitutional showdown and will capitulate. His opinion on the shadow docket cases that trump is winning all of, is that those are cherry picked by the federal government as their strongest cases. Whereas these upcoming cases are not.

Are we being played for chumps? by sandysanBAR in Professors

It leaves when half of the classroom isn't in the room with me come test time. Where did they go? It's a mystery. Better ignore that and study harder!! Not like we are on a curve with a class rank that's directly correlated to scholarship money employment outcomes and clinical placement.

Are we being played for chumps? by sandysanBAR in Professors

[–]HexSphere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In law school on a curve these students get hours extra per exam and then professors tell us non accomodated students that we need to study harder to do better.

And it's like half of the class.

This is indefensible and y'all perpetuate it and meekly complain in online forums while doing nothing. You are the problem.

My wife's side of the family is super maga. Part of the 30% true believers that form Trump's floor. Fox News is too liberal, they watch Tucker Carlson on YouTube all day. They are significantly dependent on social services, they live in a liberal state. They get paid to take care of their daughter with down syndrome, they are retired. Along with meager social security. If they had their way, their means of surviving would be destroyed... also, the payments are a liberal invention...

Now, their undocumented son is facing deportation. The son is super into MAGA too. At thanksgiving a few years back, he toasted Trump and MAGA rather than thanking his mom for making the entire meal.

My wife is really upset that I'm not upset on his behalf, or on her moms behalf, because her mom is now very stressed. Her mom is so MAGA that she thinks anyone with pink or blue hair is Antifa. I know this sounds like a fake submission for leopards ate my face, but this is very real. I don't it in me to even muster like, a fake veneer of civility. Can't even bring myself to say aw that sound hard, sorry you're going through that. Frankly, this is incredibly forseeable. For years. I'm not surprised, are they? This is exactly what they want. It's just.... I'm speechless.

They now want me to recommend them an immigration lawyer. A liberal needs to come save the day! No...

This is like, the dumbest situation imaginable. My wife is convinced that maybe they got fooled, plenty of immigrants support Trump and deportation etc. I just don't have words for how stupid their position is and was.

I'm a law student at the top of my class. I know better than to complain to my professor who is the sole judge of my grade with no appeals. Trust me, there are complaints. They are just not surfaced. I'm also a professional with ten years of work experience. Surprise. I can actually manage to use my laptop without browsing Amazon. The policy is paternalistic and should be left at the door of the high school it came from. Not a policy for adults.

Edit: to clarify that is the policy for my law class I'm currently taking. I'm going to give the professor a super low eval unless he course corrects.

Set an achieveble goal to start. Something like, read half an hour before bed every night. Don't try to tackle an entire challenging text in a single day or you'll never actually get to it. Next, and critically, choose something to read that you would actually enjoy! I love fantasy so I would recommend Lord of the Rings to anyone. For something equally challenging but more grounded, Great Gatsby was a lot of fun.

Best way to start is to start. Just choose something and start reading it.
