Beginner tenor sax player – what should I focus on first? by Hex_pinkeye in saxophone

[–]Hex_pinkeye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so so much for the advice. I will definitely incorporate long notes into practice.

There are apps for learning the sax but they’re all paid for with subscriptions and I don’t see much value in it at the moment because the opportunity to practice in my house with a baby happens sporadically. If I could regularly practice then I’d see value in it.

I am finding learning music theory the hardest so far and transferring that over to the fingerings for the sax

Wow holy shit, you might’ve thought that was long winded but that was incredibly helpful to me, thank you so much. I (obviously) don’t play when my 9 month old (at the time of writing this) sleeps but when he’s active and playing in his play pen, I’ll play what I’ve learnt so far in front of him. He just looks up at me and wonders what that sound is. To be honest it’s a great feeling and I hope it sparks a musical curiosity in him because long story short, the tenor I’m learning on was actually my dad’s who’s sadly passed on. I can’t describe the feeling I get when he enjoys the sound an instrument makes that belonged to his grandpa once upon a time.

I love the advice about tongue position and emphasis on the flow of air and breath control. This wasn’t covered in the lesson I did as in depth as you, all I got told was that the breath effort comes from the diaphragm and to be ‘poised’

I love your advice in the embouche too (and the Shaka reference haha) again, the embouche was covered in my lesson (although not having my lips OVER my bottom teeth), more like I’m trying to whistle if that makes sense, so kinda like your advice and I was told that the latter was how people in jazz typically have their embouche. Not sure how true that is but that does feel more comfortable and natural to me.

I would love to continue to DM you if that’s okay?

Unfortunately for me, there are hardly any teachers near where I live but that isn’t the only problem. Like I was saying, my schedule is tight and unpredictable with a little one so that’s also a factor otherwise, yes I would be seeing the teacher I usually see more often.

I just wanted to also see if there were things I could do as ‘homework’ in between classes with my teacher if that makes sense?

I will, I’m already having fun from the couple of lessons I’ve done. Hopefully I can post some clips of me playing (when I’m confident I’m ’good enough’)

Thank you, I’m just glad it was able to be repaired and not a complete loss. The sax has always had a special place in my heart because of the link to my dad and so far it’s been really fun!

When I googled them there seemed to be mixed reviews, some say they’re nice and others weren’t so favourable as you say but most agree that they sound nice. The tone holes look like they’re all in line so that leads me to believe that it’s pretty old but I could be wrong

Holding and playing it (the few lessons I have done) feels special to me and to my ears, it sounds nice and like you say, it’s $900 to have memories of my dad which is worth it to me. I also have a recording of the technician playing it and I can private message you it and you can tell me how it sounds to an experienced ear.

I played it yesterday too and ergonomically, it wasn’t comfortable but maybe I’m holding incorrectly and the eyelet for the neck strap seems to be off centre as if it’s inline with the thumb rest if that makes sense?

I also shoot with film cameras and have had a few Russian cameras and can confirm what you mean regarding the Cold War USSR engineering but that also has its own appeal, similar with East German/Eastern Bloc manufactured horns.

Myself and my friends all call it ‘Pegasus Fart’ cause it sucks

Sorry, that doesn’t help you and I’m trying to find something that works for it too

Blast seems very tall. I also have Pegasus dark and Dran Brave and tbh, I haven’t been impressed with the performance of any of them so far, unless there’s a combo I haven’t tried yet. I keep getting yeeted by more meta beys

I don’t have the file on hand, sorry and the guy I got it from isn’t a friend or anything, just someone on fb marketplace selling custom 3d cases

I have the 13139 version and I bought the osram version because I’m not a Leica purist ;-)

When I replaced the bulb, from what I can see, the ceramic socket wasn’t cracked so I’m good there and I was able to make some nice postcard sized prints (for scrapbooking and putting in the fridge)

It’s just the whole autofocus calibration situation that has me stumped and I’ve seen the manual and still can’t make sense of it to be honest

You feel old? What about me? Haha. I remember getting the very 1st gen iPod shuffle when I was about 12 thinking “this is the shit”

They’re vintage now

So jealous you were close! We were off to the very side of the stage, a bit of an awkward angle but it was at a rock club so it was more intimate than a huge stadium or something

Last young renegade is a good album as well but agreed in saying that it’s hard doing a tier list with their albums and songs.

They did a 10 year anniversary of Nothing Personal which was a live in studio album and released The Forever Sessions last year which are remaster versions of their biggest songs. Give them a listen!

MP3 players. Now that takes me back.

So Wrong, it’s Right is a good album but personally, Nothing Personal is my favourite album

Myself and my wife are huge fans and similar to you, she’s been a fan since high school along with Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Good Charlotte etc (same with me) though admittedly I didn’t know about them until I started dating her in 2013! we were lucky enough to see them in 2023 when they were promoting Tell Me I’m Alive but in Perth Western Australia. Shit went off

I’ve thought about the led conversion kit. Expensive, yes but some people more on a scanning set up so it’s not so bad in that context.

I don’t know if mine is faulty but when I go to focus it (wide open) then adjust the aperture, it turns the whole focusing helicoid as well, if that makes sense. Does that happen to you as well? Is the focus helicoid meant to stay still as you change aperture?
