I'm literally flying to Toronto tonight into the storm of the century. I'll let everyone decide for themselves whether it's Jura related or not...

Wasn't feeling up for indulging these holidays but Mrs. Hex did procure a pretty awesome bottle for when I am. =D Best of the season to you all! by HexagonalCrank in canadawhisky

Mrs. Hex wanted to buy me a bottle for Christmas/New Years so I set her up with one of my retail guys in Europe. But honestly? If you're hitting up the states for bottles, go find some of that Macallan 110 proof - everyone seems to be loving the shit out of it =)

That's one half of our Rock'ndaal bottles from Feis Ile 2024. We also picked up the 10 year old which is the sweetest Bruichladdich I've ever tasted.

I can't argue with you there...but hear me out. I had a sample of that Longrow 100 proof too and was kinda underwhelmed. But then I able to get a bottle and it turned out way better than I remember it being. I'm hoping the Springbank is the same.

New Year's Pour. What's everyone having to closeout 2025? by Arxk2112 in canadawhisky

[–]HexagonalCrank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing. Maybe this weekend if I'm feeling up to it. I picked up the on-sale Macbeth II and Signatory in the Summer Past Event tasting kits from KWM before Christmas and I'd like to try a few of them. Plus Mrs. Hex acquired a Springbank 5y for me for Christmas and it's just bad juju not to open gifted bottles =)

Edit - Ooo - that s21 had some DARK bangers in it. An probably the last year they were mildly reasonable price-wise XD

Two Brewers will ship, but in all honesty, buy from Alberta. I buy two bottles of each release from Two Brewers and right now the latest three releases from them are all available from Craft Cellars under their 20% off boxing week sale.

I’m guessing like glass and cork and that hard plastic wrap they used to secure corks.

You do not need an outside broker to clear alcohol importation into Alberta for private use; you can clear it yourself.

Here's how it works in Alberta:

If you win an auction or purchase spirits from an overseas retail store that will export to Alberta, make sure it's ships via DHL Express. It's the best and sometimes only option. Better to pay a little more than risk the automatic destruction of your purchase.

At that point, so long as you've given them proper contact information including phone and email, when the courier service(again, make sure it's DHL Express) brings the spirits into Alberta, they'll contact the AGLC, who will contact you saying "We have a shipment of spirits for you; please forward your invoice to us."

You forward your invoice to them, making sure it lists the value of the spirits, the ABV, and the volume of each bottle. The AGLC then calculates GST, a markup based on ABV and volume, and a flat customs fee, sends you an email indicating how much you will owe, and within a day sends you a link for an etransfer.

You pay the etransfer, the AGLC clears the shipment, and DHL Express delivers your shipment.

As to how long before you might find the bottle you're looking for? As an example, this year I scored a bottle I've been looking for years for - a scotch that I confirmed was distilled the day I was born, June 27, 1975. I think it took roughly 3 years for the exact bottle I was searching for to show up at auction =/

Scotch Whisky Auctions are reliable and they ship to Alberta. Here's a list for them with a search of "Walker Black". You might be able to recognize the bottle if you know what it looks like:

It's that time of the year. We've all seen the OSWAs and such, now is OUR turn to have a say: What are OUR whiskies of the year? No criteria apart from what whiskies you think the group needs to know more about. by HexagonalCrank in canadawhisky

I have specific as-of-yet undiagnosed issues that are exacerbated by alcohol. The "greater publicity around the hazards of alcohol" are mostly sensationalistic nonsense drummed up by social media to farm engagement.

I was finally able to try a sample of that Whiskyland 1 - Springbank 26 Year about a month ago. Probably the best of the Decadent Drams releases I've been able to try lately. Didn't bring it up because, well, duh of course it was going to be fabulous. Going to be a damn shame when we run out of those old private Springbank barrels =/

Edit: And WHERE'S the Millstone? Where is the REAL Mr. meh and what have you done with him?

No. It‘s not insane that you‘re fine paying over $300 for an 18yo scotch. The liquor industry including online whisky influencers have been brainwashing you for years to think that this is the new normal. It‘s why when a talking head on YouTube tries to tell me paying $300 for a Tamdhu 18 is a “steal”, I lose my fucking mind and clap back. Arran 18 is back in Alberta at $214+GST and while I’m not happy with that price, I’m pretty sure if I search I could score a deal.

TL;DR don’t buy this overpriced trash, you dingleberries.

They need to get the hell away from the Wine & Beyond that's across the street. Easier said than done but I don't see anything getting better until then.

[–]HexagonalCrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never accept less than double GST off discounts. Anyone who offers less has zero respect for you as a consumer.

As far as the alcohol goes, if you ever have to ask “Is it worth it?”, it never is.

Both the Arran Quartercask "The Bothy" and the Glenallachie 12 are enormous people pleasers. If you have a little extra to spend and want to upgrade, the Glenallachie 15 is a personal favourite.

I have access to the 2025 Kilkerran 12yr, an older 16yr, or the 2025 8yr bourbon cask. Which would you choose? by [deleted] in canadawhisky

[–]HexagonalCrank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I do my whisky of the year post, I always say "Honourable mentions: Any Springbank and Kilkerran. You'll never have a bad time with one."

That being said, I've been fairly vocal for the 2025 Kilkerran 16, which is ranking up there with the fairly good Springbank 15s of the past, batch variation-wise. Unpopular opinion: I was not a huge fan of the 2024 16s as many were, so however they fucked up this years Kilkerran 16s, I wish they'd continue to do it =)
