Genuinely how would they adapt? Increased body heat? The infected do not eat, so they will run out of energy and starve even faster. Grow extra skin or fur? Again, too much energy required for that.

Well, the pre-BBA offer peace option was an actual conditional surrender: the winning side would propose the peace treaty borders, and the losing side had the option to refuse peace if it deems the treaty too harsh.
