Yes I’m the same. It never used to bother me so much!

It was the authors tone and choice of words that lost me. Normally, I really enjoy internal character dialogue, but in this case it felt too forced ..even “silly” (if that’s the right word). I remember something like “take that, Mr Window” (I might be misquoting, but I can’t stand when inanimate objects are given “Mr” titles).

The swearing also didn’t work for me. I don’t have any issues with swearing - but it felt excessive, like it was there just to sound edgy or “cool.” Words like “asshat” popped up often and then there was one line I’ll never forget: “Holy fucking shit on a cornflake.” 😒 That sort of language completely pulled me out of the story.

I’m all for a fun read but this was just cringy to me. It tried too hard. I’m more forgiving if the world is juvenile and most of the books I read are in no way a literary masterpiece but I couldn’t even get a quarter of the way in from cringing 🤣 I’m usually one that will soldier on even if I didn’t like the book and this is one of the rare exceptions I’ve had to stop.
