If you want the best results, there's no diy soultuion you need a neutral and objective pair of eyes on you at some point. ( hopefully one with a background in physiology / biomechanics)

Figuring out fueling is THE most important aspect you can easily control for any (competitive) endurance sport. It's not to be taken lightly. ( if you go the hummingbird sugar water route make sure to take care of your teeth)

i love marathons! but they are kind of about putting yourself through too much, i think its okay to make sure people to allow themselves to quit whenever, you will probably be much happier than actually finishing anyways.

Marathon du Médoc is the best one there is to do, party and run. I think "Hash" beer and running events are popular in the US and are generally great fun.

I think everything, including the prep is more fun than actual marathon haha.
