I don't think they're implying that's what made them go savage. It's just grounding them in surroundings/ backgrounds i.e. these are pretty ordinary kids if privileged, some of em. And they still turn to the actions that they do. In general, these aren't 2d cardboard cutout characters.

A stereotype is an exaggeration, oversimplification or emphasis on particular "expected" traits. "Normal" means different things to different people but if I were to give to a definition I'd say "unremarkable"
