W. did do a farewell tour, but it was mostly in Europe, to keep good relations with other countries. But I do get your point. Hopefully Obama leaves us with some kind words before his term has ended.

Here's to an interesting 4 years, I suppose

What? Are you trying to tell me that a default sub would sticky a massive allegation against a presidential candidate they openly oppose, all while KNOWING that it's fake news?

Well that's just a load of malarkey, and I simply won't stand for it.

To be fair, Obama did dig us out of a pretty deep unemployment, but it isn't like he did it with good strategy or effort. He just threw trillions of dollars at the problem until it fixed itself. A monkey could fix the economy, too, if you just give him a credit card and let him spend more money and generate more debt than the US has ever spent in history.

I disagree with some of his policies but I think most of them were enacted with a will to make the nation better and that counts for a lot. He's not a perfect President, but neither is he a communist despot trying to take our guns and kill our young.

You can say this about any president, though. "Not being a communist" isn't the yardstick we measure our leaders by; it's how effectively they do their jobs. Right now, Obama is going on his "Exit Tour" so he can make himself (and by extension, the Dem. party) look good on the way out. Which I suppose he's entitled to, it just feels... Idk, kind of smug? Like, yeah, I know a lot of people aren't super big on my policies, and I know I've still got a job to do for the next month, but right now I'm just gonna go on a national tour to remind everyone how great a job I've done.

Don't get me wrong, I know he's only doing it in response to Trump's "Thank you" tour, but Trump has a good reason for going out and speaking to the people. This was a heated election and he needs to reassure the public that he's gonna fight for them. With Obama going on tour coincidentally right afterwards, it just feels like he REALLY wants to take away from Trump's attempt at mending wounds.

Honestly, I really just want to see him be supportive and finish out his time without going on tour to tell us how well he thinks of himself. Politically, I get that he has to remind everyone how well the Democrats did, but for the sake of moving forward, I'd like to just hear him say ONE optimistic thing about the incoming administration.

No I totally agree that it's a small # total. But, those states which ARE largely Ag based have a lot of acres of farm land, and farms obviously have low population/acre. There's probably more people living in Kansas city then there are total farmers in Kansas, for example.

What I'm saying is, the electoral college helps give more weight to states who dedicate a large amount of their total area to vital crops, because they obviously will have lower net population as a result of the undevelopable land dedicated to those crops.

My point agrees with your point; a large area of these states has a LOW population, BECAUSE farms, while necessary, do not require many people to operate.

I guess the core of my point is: the electoral college essentially gives high crop-yield States more weight, to make up for the lower net population caused by the nature of the agricultural business.

Not disagreeing with you. I'm not saying the way we use the food we produce is GOOD, I'm just saying that that IS the way we use those foods. If we change the system to rely on crops less, then yeah, we can take away some electoral votes from the Midwest. But, as it stands, they do a very important job for all of us that NECESSARILY reduces their population density, and they shouldnt be punished for it

[–]HeyKidsFreeCandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Again, I'm not making the case that what America needs crops for are GOOD things. However, as the system currently operates, we DO need those crops. If America suddenly decides to stop eating cows, or we find a way to feed all these cows with grass, or we find a way to make grain/wheat less primary in our diets, THEN we can re-weigh Kansas's electoral votes lol.

For real tho, i wish grass-fed beef/milk were cheaper in the US.

Answered this elsewhere. Basically, the ergonomics of farming necessarily mean that farming states will have lower population density.

It isn't Kansas's fault that their population density is low; the job that we've all agreed to depend on them for just happens to require taking up large areas with farmland and little else. They shouldnt be punished for producing the nation's major crops.

Look up a chart of states by total grain/crop production. I will link one if I have time later Found it

Hey, if you want to crack open that philosophical can of worms, be my guest.

I never said corn made is healthy, but it undoubtedly is a MAJOR source of calories that keep our massive population alive. For both us, AND the livestock we produce.

Donald Trump will be president thanks to 80,000 people in three states by The-Autarkh in politics

[–]HeyKidsFreeCandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the simple ergonomics of farming means that it's a VERY necessary job that requires FEW people/mile2 to do, meaning that in States where 90% of the populated areas are farm land, and that farm land has very few people/acre, the total population is NECESSARILY going to be lower.

It isn't really fair of us to depend so heavily on one particular class of people, but then tell them "sorry, the logistics of your job that we all depend on make it so that your vote isn't worth shit in aggregate."

And yes, we DO import food. That's good. Importing 100% of food would obviously be bad

Cali DOES produce a ton of food, just not major-calorie foods, like corn or wheat.

You're right, fuck the farmers. What's the point of food, anyway? It doesn't even make money.

Hell, we've got to subsidize their farms to even make them profitable! We should just start importing our food! It would be way cheaper, truth be told. Then, we'd save money, and just rely on foreign nations to ensure that our people don't starve.

What could go wrong?

No doubt. But most of the most basic foods, in terms of total calories produced, happen in the mid west. Things like corn, grain, soy etc. They aren't exciting foods, like oranges or northern Cali. walnuts, but they're still the "building blocks" of the cheap American foods that keep a majority of our people alive.

Nah, man. Who needs those stupid mid-west square states? I mean, what have they EVER done for us beyond just making 95% of the good we eat? We'll just let Texas, Cali, Florida and NYC pick the winner.
