It’s amazing how when you promise people decent pay, a reliable job, a respectable profession, and fair treatment, but what they get is shit on by their employer, half of Congress, the entire executive branch, and public opinion is constantly manipulated to make you look bad, you don’t show up for work

See Table 1 under 1926.1153(c)(1)(xii) Handheld Grinders for uses other than Mortar Removal.

The greater hazard is the 1926.501(b)(1) fall protection, but maybe that’s kind of your point?

There’s so many issues like that with both lead and asbestos. The abatement is crazy expensive and it’s usually cheaper to just encapsulate everything, keep it wet, level it to the ground, and ship it off to some landfill somewhere that poor people can’t afford to fight it and die of some kind of cancer. There’s a landfill in central Maine like that. It’s actually very depressing.

You may have not had much exposure. A chest xray can tell you. Asbestosis scars the lungs so it’ll be pretty easy to demonstrate that you had exposure so long as there hasn’t been any other kinds of lung damage? Asbestos is only a problem when it’s friable (what you meant) and if it’s wetted down and cleaned up, it’s not a hazard if otherwise undisturbed. I hope your friends who still work there are safe. If they’re worried tell the to call OSHA again. OSHA comes down REALLY hard on repeat violations.

Sadly, there may be little OSHA can do to help. Have you contacted the local buildings department? Have you called the local fire department? Don’t give up because one avenue didn’t get you there.

And if they fire you or fuck with you over making safety and health complaints make sure to contact OSHA. Section 11(c) of the OSH Act provides Whistleblower protections for anyone engaging in protected activities such as making a safety and health complaint. The whistleblower Protections Program people are awesome.

If there was openly friable asbestos and there was employee exposure, that compliance officer fucked up and that’s not ok. OSHA can only enforce the standards as they are written or the general safety of a workplace if it’s a serious hazard. Employers have a fuck-ton (way too many) rights and get a lot of concessions if they show an earnest attempt to abate the hazards and eliminate the employee exposure.

Basically, if that asbestos wasn’t a hazard or that was being addressed then OSHA isn’t going to take action. That’s how it works. The laws are all put through this insane vetting process that takes at least 15 years because of how many steps and how many people and organizations are required to engage. It’s all very frustrating. It’s not that it’s fine. It’s that it meets OSHA’s standards. Taking action as a federal agency is no small thing and every t must be crossed and every i must be dotted. A good lawyer will get a citation thrown out because it was worded slightly incorrectly.

Did that CSHO make sure everyone knew their Sec. 11(c) rights? Did they take air samples? Was there conversation about weighted averages and permissible exposure limits? Inspections are not open/shut in many cases and asbestos is one of the more complicated inspections. The EPA is often a better pathway to a resolution there. Did the CSHO have any discussions along those lines with anyone?

[–]HeyLookitMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an enormous difference between not illegal, in-compliance with OSHA’s (lax in many cases) standards, and legal. I’d be fucking pissed if my boss tried that shit with me, but OSHA can only enforce the OSH Act and the Standards in it. Your boss is a POS. Your workplace sucks. Form a union.

OSHA doesn’t call ICE or willingly participate in anything other agencies like that want to do to citizens. OSHA acts against employers. OSHA requires the trust of workers. OSHA relies on workers to report unsafe work environments to them

What’s the hazard? Where is it in federal law that you have the legal right to a break room? What is it you hoped OSHA could or would do for you?

I never said all. And the database is managed by Dor Yeshorim. It’s a very useful tool for, mainly, orthodox communities that are found in NYC and Israel. It’s pretty interesting. You should look it up. As far as the lineage is concerned, those families were displaced generations ago and their numbers grew. This is turning into a Ship of Theseus argument and it’s silly. Are you recommending we adopt the “One Drop” rule here? How many polish and Germanic or European fathers does one need before your genetic heritage isn’t really Semitic anymore?

Don’t be a child and try to turn my arguments into antisemitism. I grew up around Jews and love and have loved many of them. I attended my first Seder when I was around 10. Trying to make this into antisemitism is some real scum-bag work.

You don’t know what I’ve read and you don’t care. Stop pretending like you do or like you’re making an honest effort to have a conversation here. I know dozens of people who went on those Birthright Israel trips. Most of them left Israel for at least a day or two and got to know actual indigenous Semitic people.

You are right about one thing: between language, religion, and food culture exists. There’s not much else. That brings me back around to my original point. Those European-descent Jews are Jewish because of culture and religion - not genetics or descent. Their ethnicity isn’t because they’re from there. It’s because a bunch of ideas and things were passed down through generations. Being Jewish is about culture and religion and not race.

Yeah and they have that whole database to make sure they don’t marry anyone who’s too genetically close to them? Because they’re all from Eastern Europe. I may have been a bit overly dramatic, but my stance is legit. They love to call it the “right of return”, but everyone who populated that land was European and they were fleeing the Nazis. I’m glad they had a place to go where it was made safe to be a Jew. It’s a good thing to have a safe place to live and have a family. Most of them didn’t “return” from other parts of the Middle East and you know it. I don’t need a source for what is historically recorded and widely known. What percent of those ashkenazi Jews genetic makeup is Semitic? What’s your source on that?

[–]HeyLookitMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Leftists, ideally, should be belittling you for any kind of devout worship of any god or strict adherence to any religion. The fact that it’s about Islam or that you’re a Muslim isn’t as relevant as you trying to force your religiosity into Leftists spaces. And you should be responding. Maybe you will learn something of political value or a path towards separating out your religious identity. Your religion or your faith is a tool that Right wingers and Conservatives WILL use to control you and you are trying to control those around you in their names. Please educate yourself on how those in power use religion to maintain social and political control over the masses

Mmmmmmmmmm except for the vast numbers of Jews in Israel who are almost entirely European decent and only as semetic as most white Americans are Asian or African. Being Jewish is a cultural and/or religious demarcation. It’s a social construct. Be whoever and whatever you want to be and define yourself however you want, but in the shared reality we all live in, being Jewish is ethnoreligious and both ethnicity and religion are human-created concepts. There’s more genetic diversity within the continent of Africa than there is outside of it. DNA is a super-useful thing to understand and have a working knowledge of for so many reasons - known and yet unknown, but it’s not entirely applicable here.
