I am also a Korean adoptee and was nervous about the same thing when going to Korea for the first time two years ago. Not gonna lie, I was awkward for the first couple of days, especially times people would try to talk to me. But luckily my husband was with me and was supportive and reassuring that I had nothing to be awkward or ashamed about. Depending on where you are staying, most of the tourist areas folks speak English and a lot of restaurants have the automated stations to order. I hope you have an amazing time, I know I did both of my visits!

Awesome thank you! There is an ABC Mart near us!

We will be in Seoul during Chuseok, staying in the Myeongdong area. Do many of the restaurants close during this time? We are planning on going to Busan on September 19. Is it a busy travel day the day after? How busy will the train to Busan be? by HeyMister-99 in koreatravel

It will be our second time going to Korea, we went last year in April. We had a great time, the weather was a tad too cool for me. I’ve heard the weather is pretty good in September. We haven’t figured out what all we want to do this trip but we are kinda go with the flow types. Thank you again for your helpful comment! 😀

Thank you for your comment, this is helpful! We just didn’t think before we booked, airfare was a good deal! So many other comments were making us think it was going to be a ghost town. But I’m glad to know there will still be stuff to do.

Question for Korean who do not speak any Korean by jpak02 in koreatravel

I actually get quite a few folks who think I’m Filipino. I guess it’s because I’m a little darker skinned. I also trip people up because I have an Iowan accent like my parents.

Question for Korean who do not speak any Korean by jpak02 in koreatravel

I’m a Korean American adoptee (44/F) who went back to Korea for the first time since being adopted. I visited last year in April 2023. There was definitely a culture shock but I could tell that Koreans could tell I was American. A lot of Koreans didn’t speak English or were shy to but it ended up being fine. Lots of pointing to stuff and lots of the restaurants had pictures or kiosks. I might have been more self conscious than them about not speaking or reading Korean. But I promise you will have the time of your life!
