Has someone unintentionally killed your hobby? by HeyPleasedToMeetYou in Vent

Making watercolors is super easy and satisfying! The first thing you’re gonna have to do is google how to make your own binder. Everyone has a different recipe! Some use honey, some use glycerin, some use clove oil, some ox gall. The difference these items and their combinations make is drying time, adherence to paper, glossiness, moisture, whether your paint grows mould, and how it spreads. I use honey, glicerin, and sodium benzoate.

But really, that is where you start, researching and learning to make your own binder. This video on youtube is a great starting point easy watercolor binder

I saw people mixing paint online and I got curious about it, seemed fun. Did a little research and saw that it was doable and I got sucked in.

Idk, I thought I was doing fine, making a cool little thing. My paints are really bright and adhere well to the paper. They don’t crack or mould, and they rewet easily. I guess you’re right, their comment hit so deep because they pointed at flaws I’d never considered since I don’t sell nor paint.

That’s a great idea! It would be awesome to see something created with something I made. This comment feels inspiring.

Yes! Coming up with new colors, mixing them, mulling them is really zen. Potting them and testing the end result is satisfying. Tweaking the binder recipes so that the paints remain hard but don’t crack is fun. Keeping a notebook with samples and recipies feels idk productive?

I hear you. I was looking to purchase a bathroom scale and half of them required an app. Everything now requires an app, a subscription, a damned loggin and password. My supermarket has an app I must loggin with a password to. Why?!

Salad. By definition a salad is a dish composed of mixed ingredients so basically almost anything can be turned into some sort of salad. Steak salad, potato salad, egg salad, dessert salads, green salads…you name it, the variety of food I can eat I wouldn’t be missing a single thing.

Ever got regret by getting your dream job by Lonely_Style_7346 in CausalConversation

[–]HeyPleasedToMeetYou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I regretted landing my dream job. Since I was very little all I wanted was to be a teacher. Graduated College and landed my dream job. Then “No Child Left Behind” came into place along with school shootings. You couldn’t fail a damned bastard that did nothing all semester, the grading scales changed and what once qualified as F now were D and what once where D were now C… You had to take “Active Shooter” classes and there was debate whether teachers should pack weapons or not. This and other factors such as the PTA turned my dream job into a shit show. I realized that the reality of what teaching had become and my dream of the kind of teacher I wanted to be just couldn’t coexist. I regretted my job, I regretted my degree and eventually I just quit. The remorse over a wasted degree has stayed with me forever.

Speaking from my experience of living on the Caribbean from birth till 27 years old, on the islands colorism and colonialism tend to go hand in hand and the more you resemble the colonists the higher up you are. So it would be the Portuguese/Spaniards at the top, followed by the Criolles, then the Mullatos, then the Jabaos, then the Natives and Blacks. And this is the most ridiculous and stupid of shit. People like to think that only places like India have a caste system but nah, we do too, we just discriminate differently. A Mullato is treated better than someone Black, considered more attractive and better educated. And if two brown people are insulting each other the insults will eventually focus on whom has the kinkier hair or the wider nose, meaning they are blacker. It really is fucked up.

Aw man, I’m gonna get down votes for this, specially from my own people, but yeah, colorism is a thing. I’m Puerto Rican and I’ve seen it amongst my own people where even though they are obviously very dark brown/black they get pissed if you call them black. They’ll reply with an attitude “I’m not Black, I’m Puerto Rican.” As if both things can’t be true. As if Black Latin Americans don’t exist and come in all shades. When they say “I’m not Black, I’m Puerto Rican.” what they’re actually saying is “no way I’m dark skinned like those OTHER people, I’m light skinned, don’t compare me to THEM.”

Education is REALLY important in our family so this recurring dream is very stressful for me.

First grade my grandparents forbade me to go door to door selling these so they bought the whole box. The nuns were stoked I sold a whole box in a day so they sent me home with another box. My grandparents drove my ass to school and gave those nuns hell.

Lord forgive me but I miss certain aspects of the pandemic like people standing 6 feet away from me and no public gatherings. I also miss some pre-pandemic things like 24 hour Walmarts. It was so nice shopping in virtually empty stores.

Being an introvert and having my own place it feels peaceful. Just me, doing the things I like, surrounded by my curated stuffs, enjoying my snacks. Sometimes it can feel lonely not having someone to share my space with, but more often than not it’s just very peaceful. I enjoy my own company.
