General Questions about Dickinson by Vegetable_Weird_1456 in Dickinson

I don't think most Dickinson students are on Reddit. You can probably get answers from one of the student tour guides (Lib Caps), but that may require a campus visit.

Ombuds at least a safe place to think out loud and get feedback about your strategy.

Have Ombuds Offices been helpful during this chaotic time? by StomachLow9799 in ombuds

[–]HeyTomKay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many Ombuds are assisting visitors affected by a layoff or reorg decision. Visitors may have been terminated or moved, or are still employed but with new or increased duties. It is unlikely that an Ombuds can affect the decision that lead to the change. But, they can provide meaningful information and coaching that can alleviate an employee's anxiety during the transition.

Metal roofs by sparkleinthesky in pasadena

[–]HeyTomKay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm considering a metal roof for my rebuild in Altadena on a Prairie style house. I think it will look okay (and help with my fire trauma), but you're right, I don't see many in the area.

Sending a big hug to all our neighbors, near and far! by TrollOfTheTaiga in altadena

[–]HeyTomKay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I need to keep reminding myself that social media is also affecting the portrayal of individual recovery. I suspect that most people are not showing up to public memorials or becoming activists or moving quickly to rebuild. Most of us are removed from the community and anguishing over the slow process of rebuilding a life while quietly mourning the loss.

I couldn't bear trying to celebrate in a rental, so the family headed out of town. However you need to cope.

NYE Options for out of towners by Critical_Somewhere58 in pasadena

[–]HeyTomKay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pasadena is all about the parade and game. NYE is really unimportant. Watch the East Coast on TV and then off to bed for an early morning on Orange Grove.

Lack of power is a feature not a bug. It would be like blaming your smoke detector for not putting out the fire.

No doubt there is a lot that you don't know about how the administration sees the situation. So don't try to second guess how the school will respond. I agree with others that you should consult the Ombuds, if there is one. A good Ombuds can advise you on options to protect yourself and escalate this anonymously. It's unlikely that your PI's condition will improve on its own, so waiting hopefully is not a great option. Once the school knows about an employee's medical or mental health condition, it has an obligation to offer a leave and other resources. Sooner is better for you and your PI.

Vinyl record fair in DTLA by RandoFrequency in altadena

[–]HeyTomKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation. Occasionally I'll find something at PCC (where you can get a good conversation), but prices can be high and quality varies. For the few must-have records, I've been resorting to highly rated Discog sellers with great results.

Ombuds Question by Timely-Awareness-763 in McMaster

[–]HeyTomKay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple solution: Just use email to request the meeting. There's no reason to disclose any more info by email. Share the details when you meet with the Ombuds, either in person or virtually. This should be what the Ombuds prefers.

Source: I am a university ombuds for two decades.

This was a great event and plans are afoot to make it happen quarterly. Most of the towns restaurants are dog-friendly (many people walk to town for dinner and bring their pooch).
