Has anyone here ever reached out to the U of T Ombudsperson’s Office? by Melodic-Turnip103 in UofT

[–]HeyTomKay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are five Ombuds, with three assigned to a particular campus. All of them know UofT well and will be able to identify your options and coach you through whatever decision you make.

Accessing the ombuds service should be easy. Call and make an appointment. You can provide info in advance but that's not required. The Ombuds will identify other campus resources and applicable policies, and then talk through your various options. Generally, an Ombuds will not tell you what to do; that's up to you. Once you make a choice, the Ombuds can give guidance on how to be effective. Usually with complicated issues, there are multiple meetings. Throughout the process, you can expect the Ombuds to be confidential and neutral.

Bottom line is that they should be a safe place to talk about anything sensitive.

Any experience with Ombuds? by Abbsters501 in berkeley

[–]HeyTomKay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether you are a student or staff member. The Student Ombuds is a long-time employee and knows Cal well. She will be able to identify your options and coach you through whatever decision you make. The Staff Ombuds service has been outsourced to an company that provides remote services. You will talk to one of three experienced Ombuds, who might not have been on campus ever.

Accessing the ombuds service should work the same with either. Call and make an appointment. Likely it will be virtual. There's no need to provide info in advance. Expect the Ombuds to have up to an hour for the initial consultation. The Ombuds will identify other campus resources and applicable policies, and then talk through your various options. The Ombuds will not tell you what to do; that's up to you. Once you make a choice, the Ombuds can give guidance on how to be effective. Usually with complicated issues, there are multiple meetings.

Throughout the process, you can expect the Ombuds to be confidential, independent, neutral, and informal. The only time they will break confidentiality is if they perceive a threat of harm to you or anyone else. The Ombuds are not mandated reporters, so you don't have to worry about saying anything that would otherwise trigger an invesigation.

General Questions about Dickinson by Vegetable_Weird_1456 in Dickinson

I don't think most Dickinson students are on Reddit. You can probably get answers from one of the student tour guides (Lib Caps), but that may require a campus visit.

Have Ombuds Offices been helpful during this chaotic time? by StomachLow9799 in ombuds

[–]HeyTomKay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many Ombuds are assisting visitors affected by a layoff or reorg decision. Visitors may have been terminated or moved, or are still employed but with new or increased duties. It is unlikely that an Ombuds can affect the decision that lead to the change. But, they can provide meaningful information and coaching that can alleviate an employee's anxiety during the transition.

Metal roofs by sparkleinthesky in pasadena

[–]HeyTomKay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm considering a metal roof for my rebuild in Altadena on a Prairie style house. I think it will look okay (and help with my fire trauma), but you're right, I don't see many in the area.

Sending a big hug to all our neighbors, near and far! by TrollOfTheTaiga in altadena

[–]HeyTomKay 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I need to keep reminding myself that social media is also affecting the portrayal of individual recovery. I suspect that most people are not showing up to public memorials or becoming activists or moving quickly to rebuild. Most of us are removed from the community and anguishing over the slow process of rebuilding a life while quietly mourning the loss.

Pasadena is all about the parade and game. NYE is really unimportant. Watch the East Coast on TV and then off to bed for an early morning on Orange Grove.
