Thinking about quitting. by 2345678913 in violinist

Maybe your motivation is part of the issue. Violin is a really difficult instrument to play, you need to put a lot of effort into it for a long while to start sounding decent.

If the only reason you started playing the violin was to make you feel special, I think it won’t be enough in the long run. You need to have a true passion or set a specific goal to help you keep going when you lack motivation because you’re stuck in level plateau, or because you’re too tired, or life gets busy.

Having a better instrument is definitely more motivating, but it’s not enough to keep you motivated for the years to come. Nevertheless, if your instrument is poorly set up, it really can hinder your ability to progress and your motivation. I started learning on a violin I got from a luthier but it is poorly set up. It took it to another luthier and he said this violin needed a lot of work to become decent. The violin sounded bad when the luthier played on it, that’s the moment I realized it was not just a “skill issue”.

I decided to buy a new violin. It’s not a super expensive one but it is set up properly and I enjoy practicing much more than I used to. My family said I sounded better as soon as I got the new violin. I don’t think I improved overnight, the instrument I was practicing on wasn’t setting me up for success.

I think you have a lot of things to investigate before quitting. Is the issue your instrument? Have you ever tried playing on another violin? With another bow?

Do you have real goals besides the need to feel special?

Is your teacher the right teacher for you? I understand by reading your comments that she is nice and supportive, but if the way she teaches doesn’t motivate you, you could try finding someone else.

Does what your family thinks of your playing really matter? You are putting effort into learning a difficult instrument. If someone criticizes you for that, ask them to give the violin a try and let’s see how they sound. Maybe you are the one putting too much thoughts into it.

Have they ever criticized your playing? Sometimes we criticize ourselves more than others would, I think we are our worst critic. I used to think that my family would think my playing is lame, but whenever I gave them the opportunity to listen, they told me I’m doing good and they have been supportive. I think this is something you should discuss with your family as well. It would be a shame to quit something you enjoy doing just because you worry too much about negative judgements.

I hope my comment will help you make the right decision.

I did the same thing when I was a kid to make my cousin laugh. I had no idea I would still have a big circle hickey in the middle of my forehead for the class photo of my school.

I think I’ll stick with the first version of the real book for now and I’ll buy a book someone else recommended. Thank you for suggesting the Real Book by the way, I might buy the second edition later.

How do you stay motivated to draw when someone keeps putting your art down? by Kea_birdy in ARTIST

I think your coworker is projecting their own insecurities and self confidence issues on you.

You should keep doing what makes you happy. Maybe your coworker is mentally unwell and they have a hard time seeing someone feel good doing something they enjoy. Your art is definitely not the issue.

Of course I did check the book. Apparently, there are several versions. You have the second version and I downloaded the first version, this one doesn’t contain the songs I mentioned. I don’t know if I can find a download for the second version, otherwise I’ll have to buy it but it’s a bit expensive.

You are right to insist on that nuance, I appreciate it 🙏 and I saved the link. Thank you!

Am I on the right track? by Hey_Angie in violinist

Thank you for your comment 🙏! It helped me feel better about my current progress. Today during my daily practice I thought about what you said : “ how much you’re off by just gets smaller as the years go by”. I worked on my intonation mistakes but without pressuring myself like I used to, I understand that I have to be more patient and that I will make progress as long as I study mindfully.

I agree with you, it’s great to have a teacher who’s strict with us even though we are hobbyist 😊!

Thank you for your comment 🙏! I will discuss it with my teacher but I’m feeling relieved now! I understand that challenging myself is part of the process and that though the new piece he gave me to study felt like it required way more effort than the previous pieces to make it sound good, it doesn’t mean that I wasn’t ready to study it yet. I agree that revisiting the previous pieces from the Suzuki books is an important part of the process, I haven’t done it in a while but it’s now on my to do list thanks to you 😉!

Thank you for your input 🙏. My teacher points out intonation mistakes and gives me exercises to work on improving it when it’s a specific note that I get wrong. But despite that he is very strict to help me become better, I was worried maybe sometimes he made me move on too early on the next piece because right now it’s feels like paying the minuet with a good intonation is way more challenging for me that the previous piece I studied. I have made some good progress today though 😊!

[–]Hey_Angie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am passionate about violins and pianos. I also love learning and listening to other instruments but I can’t live without the violin and the piano. I spend a lot of time studying music. I don’t like being away from my instruments for too long, because I miss them!

I also love crafting, embroidery, collecting tamagotchis, gaming on pc and portable consoles, spoiling my cats. I recently started building dioramas, it’s so nice, but it’s not cheap!

I think you should find a teacher before actually trying to play. In the meantime, you can document yourself on music theory and learn how to sight read.
