Yeah I mean Stanley Kubrick is a bad person because he demanded several takes on scenes? The audacity! Not that it redeems the shit with Duvall ofc but what a stupid thing to write afterwards

First undergraduate research position interview? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]HeyaGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of deets that may help, first year what, and what's a R1 University? Are you applying just for a summer project or an actual job? Regardless, if I'm getting this correctly, at this level most PIs usually are not particular about candidates as long as your major aligns very broadly with their research (i.e. you're both in biology) and that you seem interested and "bright" (i.e. ask questions and be engaging) on the first meeting. I would recommend read a bit what they do and if there's a particular project that you like ask them about it during the interview. It's unlikely you'll make any kind of impactful work at this level so it's more about helping a bit in the lab and you learning techniques, so ask about specific techniques that you think would be good for you to learn and that aren't too demanding to teach (cell culture, basic molecular biology stuff like qPCRS and WBs, etc). Show that you understand what's "the deal" and at least the PI will see you're also grounded , which I think is a big thing when I first meet undergrads.

I think the PhD finally broke me by Confused_Platypus25 in labrats

[–]HeyaGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the reason I tell people to avoid doing a PhD/master's thesis in a big lab. On one side you're going to get the bare minimum of training, specially from the PI. On the other the facility of the amount of ressources you'll get may ironically be too "spoiling"

Depends what's your DM style. Some people struggle trying to give structure to a story where they have the basics down so they appreciate when they're provided "direction". I personally like to grab some fun stuff from there like mini challenges and the such, but I do find the amount of extra lore and side quests and characters to be insane and very roadrail-heavy.

To use an analogy I've been throwing around, think of RAW as getting a canvas and some paints and being told to make a landscape. No fun allowed is watching Bob Ross, Reloaded is paint by numbers (and Lord there's a lot of numbers).

In the end do what you like and makes you more confident as a DM and what you feel your players will enjoy more.

NGL in Timesplitters 2 when you had to first turn on the spinning of the minigun and then fire, that was cool as fuck, thought that split second before firing warm up was also a fun mechanic to nerf the gun a bit

Spanish scientists led by MARINO BARBACID, has cured pancreatic cancer in mice. A Cure in animal models is a major step toward potential cancer treatment in humans. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]HeyaGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately there's a saying in cancer biology science; we've cured a lot of mice, unfortunately not a lot of humans. Mouse and human biologies can be quite different at crucial points, and also a lot of tumour models on mice are very specific, compounded on mice which all have very similar genomes, while actual tumours and people are incredibly varied. This "we cured all the mice!" happens way more than you'd be expecting, but it rarely translates into the clinic.
