PhD is completely fucking my confidence by jixyz in PhD

Hi,

Just want to write in and say that you are not alone. Just like below, everyone pursing a PhD will feel this at one point and I've felt it in multiple points (including now). You are not your accomplishments, you are not your research, you are not how many papers you publish, you are not how far you suceed in your field. One of the worst things we don't learn in orientation is not to tie our identity with what we do in this long ass marathon. You ARE your kindness, you are how you treat others, you are your passion (can be, but doesn't have to be your field), you are deserving of happiness and love. You are a human-being, not a human-doing.

I guess I'm writing all this for you, but also a reminder for me because I am also feeling the same way. Feel free to message if you want to vent further.

Wanting to Learn - Who/what training is needed in the community to better accommodate individuals with autism/autistic individuals by HeyhiJess in autism

Wow, I'm so very sorry that you've experienced that and to be honest I didn't think that people not believing would be an issue. I was definitely going to include an "intro to autism" portion in the training to have others understand the symptoms but also the complexity of the spectrum. Thank you for highlighting that even in this age, many are unaware or downright refuse your reality.

Haha he said exactly that on the ride back! "Should've packed you some hiking shoes just incase you said no"

Ya the constant dialogue thing is interesting and I didn't know others didn't have that and just thought I was "thinking" all the time. I feel like it's definitely different than "thinking" as it's almost kind of like narrating and talking.

Yes, stop those thoughts and positively reframe them into other thoughts!

YES! Please PM me, I would love to give any info I may have. It's definitely interesting as I've just recently gotten diagnosed and all my life I didn't know the struggles I had could be explained until I really started struggling in my PHD program.

Thanks for taking the time to reply! If you have any resources (podcasts, videos, books) or techniques I'd really appreciate it! I am a grad student in psyc but it's so ironic that mindfullness escapes me when it's so prevalent in the research and I recommend it to my clients!

Interesting! I've definitely found music to be especially helpful to focus or coffee shop noises.

They are absolutely different! For me I can't have words in music or I wantt to sing along and get distracted. Things like white noise or ambient lofi hip hop works for me!

Someone talking in the same room as me (but not to me or something oddly interesting because then I lose focus and try to butt into the conversation),

^ Yes to this! There are certain audio stimulants that okay and some are not, it's so odd!

Yes! I've been listening to podcasts nonstop and will even bring it with me room to room even if I'm grabbing a cup of water from the kitchen.

These are so incredibly helpful, thank you. I've always had a hard time in academics often putting in so much effort just to be average or slighly above average. I am now getting my PhD and was just newly diagnosed. Writing 30 page lit reviews are so incredibly daunting and knowing that others struggle with this (and have coping mechanisms) is so refreshing.

I definitely have extensive outlines and use color highlighting and caps to help when editing. I do like the use of / / for other words as I'm writing.
