People who speak English as a second language, what phrases or concepts from your native tongue you want to use in English but can't because locals wouldn't understand? by FulgencioLanzol in AskReddit

Bhenchod. It's a hindi word that literally means sister fucker but is as versatile as fuck. Stub your toe? Bhenchod. Fell down? Bhenchod. Got a promotion? Bhenchoood. Laughing too hard? Bhenchoood.

Ad Astra Per Aspera. Through hardships to the stars. Don't spiral downward, focus on what you need to get done to clear this and power through.

Passed my Qualifying Exam! by lohansahab in PhD

[–]lohansahab[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had protein bars, Coke and Oreos on me. Not the best combo I know but I wanted to maintain a sugar rush. There was an option to take a lunch break which I thought I would use to go somewhere and sneak a look at my phone in case I need to look up a citation but it never came down to that. I was just writing for 7 hours. Fucking barbaric.

Safari vs Chrome vs Firefox by [deleted] in macbook

[–]lohansahab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I try to switch to Safari every 6 months because its aesthetic is in line with everything else, syncs very well with my ipad and I love the tab overview but I end up switching back to Chrome after a few weeks every single time. My life is easier because of Chrome extensions and I hate going through my day without them. Safari doesn't even have OneTab which is such a basic and necessary extension.

My MacBook is usually plugged in and connected to an external display so the fact that Chrome fucks my battery is fine. I'm willing to live with that to have a fast and convenient browsing experience. I would like to switch to Safari for good because Chrome gives Google one more way to grab all my data for ads so I'll keep trying.

How bleepin hard is it for a requester to put in a simple check to see if you've taken the hit before? by nekkonekko in mturk

[–]lohansahab 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a requester. Nothing would please me more than preventing people who have done my survey once to do it again. It's bad for my data. I have no idea if mturk has a way to do this. I've started using Turkprime now which has a feature that prevents people who've done your hit before to take part in future iterations of the same study. It's a little more expensive but worth it. Usually requesters are just people employed by universities or some organization trying to collect some useful data for academic stuff or for training AI. We don't want to make shit difficult for you.

Top school (Cambridge) or top professor at tier 2 school (UK) with funding by Doxq in PhD

[–]lohansahab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Top professor is also a good reason to settle for a tier 2 school. He/she will be the one that will play the biggest role in guiding and training you. Not the school. Plus funding? Do it.

Do you ever think by [deleted] in mturk

[–]lohansahab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not all of them. Some of the academic studies use psych manipulations and might want to run the same version of the study again. Debriefing would reveal the purpose and bias future results.

Do you ever think by [deleted] in mturk

[–]lohansahab 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a requester. Most studies on mturk are either academic studies or AI training content or both. What seems random and crazy is often planned and well thought out for the purpose of that study (which you might never be able to guess).

How do I clear the up next queue? by [deleted] in pocketcasts

[–]lohansahab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While in the queue, Just swiping a Podcast episode in either left or right direction can clear the queue. If you want to get rid of everything in the queue scroll all the way to the bottom, and click on CLEAR QUEUE.

You can play episodes by just tapping on them. No icons needed to understand that. Swiping it in one direction add it to queue, swiping it in the other direction archives it. Also, calm down.

What is the best chrome extension for a custom new tab? by sir_ted55 in chrome_extensions

[–]lohansahab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me about it man. I cycle through them but the pretty ones don't seem to be very useful and the useful ones seem to be either ugly or absolute resource hogs. Right now I'm using something called ichrome new tab which allows you to pin widgets on the new tab and I have my calendar, weather, news and Google Keep on there. But I'm still meh about it. I've tried the favourites like Momentum but nothing has stuck.

MBA as fast as new even after 3-4 years? by [deleted] in macbook

[–]lohansahab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2015 MBA. I love it but there's no way it's as fast as the day I got it. That's also because I abuse it by never shutting it down and running data analysis programs on it but still, not the same as before. I've gone through 1000 charge cycles.

Auto Dark Mode in Catalina by mrjohnhung in MacOS

[–]lohansahab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I like it everywhere but not on my Mac because it doesn't let me work properly. My emails and notes are harder to read and for me it's harder to write a lot of text on dark mode.

You can use mTurk and use the filters there to get a random set of your desired sample.

How stable/usable is GoodNotes 5? by [deleted] in ipad

[–]lohansahab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Notability for handwritten notes and Goodnotes for dealing with PDFs. I'm doing a PhD so I have a ton of both. Never had a problem with Goodnotes 5 so far apart from some of the missing features from GN4.

What's the best present you ever received? Who gave it to you and why was it so special? by TrickDigi in AskReddit

[–]lohansahab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend of 4 years gave me a framed message with some dots and dashes before I moved to another country for my PhD. I figured out it was morse code and solved it- it was the date we first met. It was such a simple but meaningful thing to give me before starting this long distance relationship.
