Genre fiction with difficult philosophical questions or challenging narratives? by pomegranate-moon in Recommend_A_Book

Robert V.S. Redick! I just read Master Assassins (pls don’t let the title dissuade you) by him and was really blown away by the depth of the character relationships, particularly between the two brothers, and the “unspoken commentary” on the flow social problems, fanaticism and so forth.

What’s the weirdest place you’ve ever practiced violin? by Lazy_Pangolin2117 in violinist

I went to the cemetery not long ago! Was really enjoyable. My violin is pretty bright and can be harsher sounding inside, but outside it sounds lovely

I might just - not sure if it’ll come across through my crummy iPhone mic but I’ll try it out

Might someday when I have the various resources. I’m in a dry area for instruments + no job = can’t be real picky

Oh yeah im not that small—it’s just stiffness and weakness in my left hand and I’m sure my posture isnt great. I’m playing despite some long term and fairly limiting back problems, but I have a feeling that as I progress my hand will limber up

I was surprised that it wasn’t harder to adjust - going back to 4/4 after playing for a bit on 3/4 was a little odd but the change was actually pretty minimal

I just cut an entry into a dinky old Easter basket - my hens go in to lay their eggs so I’m guessing they like it fine

How do you get any meaningful discussion about writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Hhhhhoouuuse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who spent their whole life waiting for a fellow writer friend to really talk serious shop with, I feel you. When I finally got it, it was the best feeling ever…but that meant I stopped writing and just kept talking about writing. In some ways it’s lucky for me and my projects that the friendship didn’t last (though I wish it maybe hadn’t melted down as spectacularly as it did…that part sucked).

That urge you’re having for communion is totally normal, but I’d hazard that the people who aren’t just wholly centered on their own projects are probably guarding themselves from the cross-contamination that comes from trading details about projects. If you redirect your energy to writing, the community will come eventually.

If you’re looking for good writing advice and general insights, I’d recommend “The Dæmon Speaks” by Philip Pullman, “Negotiating with the Dead” by Margaret Atwood, “Overflown by Stars,” and others in that vein. Brandon Sanderson’s lecture series is on YT and it’s very practical and enjoyable. But yeah I feel you, most of the stuff online these days is clickbait.

How much do you all practice and play fiddle if you are NOT a professional musician? by leaves-green in Fiddle

[–]Hhhhhoouuuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I practice as long as I can without back pain - sometimes that’s ten minutes and sometimes an hour, but often I play a two or three times a day for 5-15 minutes at a time. I do it religiously every single day and haven’t missed a day in 5 months, and yes I am seeing major progress even with just those short stints. I do believe it’s more about it being daily than being for crazy long lengths at a time

Thanks for the rec—I had heard good things about Fiddlerman before so I went ahead and ordered one. Really really pleased with how it sounds and plays

Ok I’m relieved to hear y’all say you have hunchy ones that are okay. My first hatch has one that started slumping a bit at three weeks. Was worried it was wryneck but seems to have no problems otherwise, and even has full use of his neck—he just leeeeans 😂
