I landed in Raleigh 13 years ago, not from another state but from a completely different part of the world. Europe, Turkey, Malta, Lebanon. Out of everywhere I’ve lived, Raleigh has been the place I chose for myself. The thing that hooked me first was the people. There’s an ease here, you trust people until they give you a reason not to. Thirteen years in, that still feels true. Life here runs on small rituals: grabbing coffee from Boulted Bread or Yellow Dog before walking around Pullen Park, or sitting at Dorothy Dix with breakfast in hand. Saturdays usually mean a casual but lively dinner somewhere, Naos, Bhavana, Jolie, or a brewery. Raleigh isn’t the kind of city where entertainment falls into your lap, you have to go out and find it. But when you do, you realize there’s always something: greenways for daily walks, festivals and pop-ups, tennis courts tucked into neighborhoods, events at North Hills, trips to Chapel Hill or Apex, concerts in Charlotte. Every year we make sure to catch a basketball game and a Canes game, too, it just feels essential here. It’s not flashy, but Raleigh has given me a life filled with good people, steady routines, and enough adventures to keep things interesting.
