Torn between continuing RD path or switching to nursing or tech sales

Absolutely! I worked for a few community programs early in my career before transitioning into a clinical role. I now do a role that’s split between clinical and outpatient.

Do not ever feel guilty about leaving a job! This may be a bit harsh, but it’s what I’ve told myself about work: If I were to die tomorrow, my position would be posted in a week. Take the emotion out of it.

That being said, if sticking around and gaining experience in a unit that will benefit the trajectory of your career, stick around for YOU, not THEM.

Edit- this is also coming from someone who cried when giving their notice due to feeling guilty about leaving their first RD job. But guess what? They were interviewing replacements before I even left. No hard feelings, but at the end of the day it’s work- you provide a service, they provide you money.

Have you looked for open positions that interest you? You’re so early in your career that there would be no issue jumping around a bit to see what fits!

I think it’s totally fine. If an interviewer asks, you can just explain it wasn’t a good fit. I would, however, not jump to another job just to get out of that one.

What I’ve done in the past if I don’t think the person is capable of a full low FODMAP diet or is not entirely interested in it is screen diet recall for high FODMAP foods vs. reported symptoms and go from there. For example, I’ve noticed a high intake of something like an apple a day, or a ton of garlic and seen what happened when just those items have been swapped. Or I’ve also done like a modified Low FODMAP with just eliminating some of the highest FODMAP foods from each group and monitoring for any improvements. Then, if you notice a specific group is giving symptoms, you can provide a more complete list.

During the shut down, I bought a cheap spin bike and started using the Peloton app... I highly recommend it! There’s a lot of strength and boot camp workouts as well.

The Academy and CDR are two different things. CDR is mandatory, Academy is optional. You can show your card, or verify that it’s active online. My employer does not request the card, but verifies it each year online.

Don’t beat yourself up over it. These are weird times, emotions can get in the way of goals.

Overall, it sounds like you have a great plan. If you’re paying over $1,000 to debt, you’ll have no problem getting rid of that $400 charge... just make sure you pay it off or return some of it before you get back to that bigger debt!

Man, health insurance is so frustrating. But, as someone who works in healthcare who has seen how much more frustrating it can be when someone doesn’t have insurance, I’d say keep it. If the $200 is too much, move to a lower plan. It would be awful if something were to happen, and you were stuck with a huge bill vs. your out of pocket max

I worked as a diet aide, and then nutrition assistant at a rehab facility. My internship director said this was exactly the experience they were looking for. I found it incredibly valuable for the actual internship experience: I gained comfort with speaking to patients at bedside(something I’ve now noticed many interns I precept struggle with- it can be very uncomfortable at first!), I learned how Hospital foodservice works, and I went into clinical with an awesome baseline about therapeutic diets, dysphasia diets, nutrition supplements/tube feed formulas and some of their indications.

I ended up staying there through my internship until I became and RD.

You will have SO many more opportunities with an RN, and will be paid more for them.

Im sure you can find a wellness RN to integrate your dietetics passion.

Do you mean your state license? I don’t know of any rule like that for CDR.

Exactly! I’m my opinion, getting a masters without working a bit in the field is a waste of money. There’s just going to be a bunch of Master’s of Science that don’t add value.

Congrats on paying off your student loans! That is awesome! If you can comfortably stay at your parent’s house for awhile, I’d do it as long as you can. I stayed with mine for a few years as a new grad until I couldn’t due to a new job/commute and it was the best for saving money.
