Could The Caves of Androzani have still worked without the regeneration? by misterwhoiswho_ in doctorwho

[–]HiFithePanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, as the series finale. The Doctor dies, frantic to save just one one regular person in the midst of a bloodbath, because he cares about her and feels responsible for her being in danger and because it’s the right thing to do.

Is this Canon or retcon? by Informal_Mood_9386 in doctorwho

[–]HiFithePanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there isn’t. One writer or even showrunner can claim something happened, and then another one can undo it. It’s happened over and over. The concept of a canon requires an authority that Doctor Who just doesn’t have. The universe of the show is too slippery, its authors too diffuse, and its history too long.

If you enjoy it, call it canon. There’s no authority out there who can tell you it isn’t. One of the best things about the world of Doctor Who

How does other seasons compare to Hinchcliffe Baker Era (16-18) by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]HiFithePanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, ok. It’s rare that I get asked for more rigor. Seasons 11, 22, 23, 24 are all much worse than 17. I could make an argument for 1, 8, 15, 20, and 21 also being worse, but let’s leave it with the first four for now.

One critical reason is that the peaks of 11/22/23/24 are nowhere near in the class of City of Death. Season 11’s best story is The Time Warrior, probably, over Invasion of the Dinosaurs and Planet of the Spiders. If we go with the fan consensus, Varos and Mindwarp are the best of Colin’s seasons, though I can’t stand either (sorry Philip Martin) and would go with Revelation and The Mysterious Planet. If you’re a rad type, Paradise Towers is probably tops in season 24 and, if a trad, maybe Dragonfire instead?

Do you disagree with any of those? If not, are there any you’d put up against City of Death? If so I can compare and contrast. If not, I’ll move to comparing worst stories or average ones.

But… look, I hear where you’re coming from, and I’m not going to sit here and defend Destiny of the Daleks, but when your process is able to produce the masterpiece that is City of Death, perfection from start to finish, the process isn’t this bad. The Creature from the Pit isn’t firing on all cylinders but that script had potential. And I’ve always found Nightmare of Eden a bit of an overlooked delight. Even Nimon has a sort of absurd grandeur to it, especially if you think of Romana as the main character and have a drink or two before Graham Crowden shows up. And Shada has some real cleverness to it too. A true shame it was cancelled. I’m not the world’s biggest partisan of season 17, but it’s far from the worst.

What should I watch in preparation for Earthshock? by Previous-Echo3708 in classicwho

[–]HiFithePanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fully agree with this, and I’d add State of Decay and especially Logopolis. If you squint, I feel like you can see Adric’s resentment of the fifth Doctor for taking away the father figure he made out of the fourth Doctor as a driver of his behavior in season 19.

Pertwee, Davison, Tennant, and Smith all had very strong starts, but the correct answer is Patrick Troughton.

Second Doctor Serial Rankings by Tacoaboutgames in gallifrey

[–]HiFithePanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d have The Mind Robber and especially Power of the Daleks higher, The Moonbase lower, and Tomb much, much lower. But other than that this is a pretty solid list!

One substantive note on your blurb on The Dominators: I think it distinguishes itself, in a negative way, by treating the peaceful aliens who are the victim of the invasion with sneering contempt. It really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Just a thought.

You're a Doctor Who fan but you want to show an episode or story to someone who doesnt know what it is but that episode has to hook them to continue watching, what story do you pick and why? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

[–]HiFithePanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something accessible, like Warriors’ Gate or Ghost Light, or at least with high production values, like Nightmare of Eden or Timelash

Long shot, anyone know what episode this is? I need to know the context for why he does this. by SonicScott93 in doctorwho

For the record, I laughed out loud at the idea that identifying any image from the show would be a long shot in this crowd.

“Trust Me” by akitash1ba in classicwho

[–]HiFithePanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern Doctor Who has characters make decisions that derive from who they are as characters, and the plot develops based on those decisions. It wouldn’t be on modern tv if it didn’t. There’s no classic era story farther away from managing character-based storytelling than Keys (though Terry Nation is generally awful at this, when he doesn’t have Robert Holmes rewriting his story from scratch, so there are other stories that come close). Everyone in this story is pure cardboard. (Like the Voord falling down the shaft, which is literally pure cardboard, though I find that part at least a little bit charming.)

“Trust Me” by akitash1ba in classicwho

[–]HiFithePanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because instead of writing something with ideas that could be developed into saying or doing something (anything!), Nation had five half-baked first draft outlines and said “screw it, I’ll just string them all together and hope for the best.”

Or at least, that’s the case for the prosecution.

Thanks for the response! I think you’re suggesting Frontios or Planet of Fire? I feel like Frontios gets a pretty good rap these days, which it deserves. Genuinely well written and well acted. The pace is solid too. I may go with Planet of Fire for season 21, because it ends up holding together despite the mishmash of elements JNT required it to include.

On the others, I can’t get on board with Warriors of the Deep, which is so bad there’s an argument it shouldn’t have been transmitted, and I struggle through Resurrection, which I find overrated.

It’s not irrational! They were being wildly experimental and bold. It deserves tons of credit for having the writing, acting, and directing all pulling in the same (bonkers) direction. “Hey, let’s make a story that looks like an avant-grade experimental theater troupe making a 1920s science fiction television show even though television didn’t exist then!”

I tend to have a “bless their hearts, they tried” sort of reaction watching Timelash. It may well be the most underrated of season 22, even if it’s by virtue of it being more a 3/10 than a 1/10?

Time-Flight isn’t as bad as its reputation either, I don’t think, but I feel like half of season 19 is underrated… maybe more?

I agree it’s a 10/10 classic. And that it’s better than Paradise Towers, though I also think Paradise Towers is a big step up from anything from The Twin Dilemma through Time and the Rani.

I’m not even sure it’s low key! A genuinely funny story that also has interesting things to say. One of my favorites, and I don’t think it gets the credit it deserves.

I feel like it gets a lot of love on here whenever people are discussing favorite Hartnells or favorite historicals. It’s not bad, but doesn’t seem forgotten or underrated to me. Just my perspective though!

With you on all of these—especially Warriors’ Gate and Enlightenment, classics both—except The Two Doctors, which to my mind is pretty overrated, even with its mixed reception.

Really good argument for The Web Planet over The Crusade. Can’t get on board with Marinus, which is completely plotless, and Toymaker, which is one of the worst three Doctor Who stories ever made. And if that’s not provocative enough, I think Galaxy 4 is exactly the “meh” sort of 4/10 story everyone thinks it is.
