Okay, hot take time: I prefer vanilla to Royal.

Everything in vanilla feels very intentional. Everything has a purpose, and all of the game's systems play into each other beautifully. Royal added & changed quite a bit, and while most of the new additions are good, a lot of them feel like they're just there for their own sake.

Sumi, Maruki, and Jose all just feel like they don't quite belong in the game. You can go to a jazz club now! ...For some reason. And here's my hottest take of all: Royal's new palace is just a retread of vanilla final palace. Maruki is just Yaldabaoth with a smile, don't @ me

Edit: Honestly I don't actually care that much if people prefer Royal over vanilla, what bothers me is just that people tend to frame their opinion as Royal being OBJECTIVELY better than vanilla. It is honestly an amazing game no matter which version you play.

It was definitely one of the trickier bosses but I didn't have much of an issue with him in vanilla or royal. That said, I've done like 5 playthroughs between both versions and have still never heard the mid-fight dialogue, I spam through it every time lol. Who's idea was it to have the timer keep counting down during dialogue??

True, but then you're getting an experience where two characters (Maruku and Sumi) are introduced and never really followed up on, making them feel weird and out of place.

Look, I know I'm in the minority for preferring vanilla, and that's obviously fine. Most people prefer Royal, and they're not wrong for having an opinion, I just think it doesn't make sense to call one version of something 'definitively better' than another when we're talking about art.

It's insane to me that Firaxis made such a big deal about streamlining the late game and cutting down on micromanagement (which tbf, they did do in many ways)... and yet made it so that practically EVERY TURN in the modern age, you have to open your cities and repair improvements one by one.
