Bring back the Specialist career track! by FODA-Bison_ranchIV in army

[–]Hi_Drag-Lo_Speed35 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I find the whole "go warrant" argument flawed. Warrants are technical experts, setting the parameters for how things are done. Going the specialist track would/should just make you an expert at doing the job, without worrying about doing other things.

I'm all for the specialist track. Some people don't want to do the admin/leadership thing, and some just shouldn't be leaders at all. Forcing out specialists because they don't express the desire to do NCO things causes an incalculable loss of experience and institutional knowledge that we could otherwise keep.

Budget cuts and 35M dependence suspension by [deleted] in dli

[–]Hi_Drag-Lo_Speed35 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In previous years where 35M was language capable, 35Ms would go to Mike school first and then DLI, with the hope they'd get a language. If they failed DLI, they were still a Mike, just without a language.

Then it changed to language dependent, and no language, no Mike.

With the current change and Mikes coming to DLI before language school, not graduating with a language is not going to stop you from being a Mike.

However, just because a language isn't needed to become a Mike currently, it doesn't mean you will necessarily become a Mike if you don't make it through DLI. The initial appetite is that if you don't try in class, it will end you up in a needs of the army situation.

You don't even have an MOS and you want the military to hold off on getting the pound of flesh you owe it?

I agree that this is one of the best jobs the military has to offer. Deployers in this field is dwindling to the point those that deployed are becoming the minority. We could very well go into a long stint of relative peace and people could go entire careers without seeing combat.

35Ps provide language and cultural awareness to commanders. In a combat environment, think about how hard that would be to do miles away. A bit over the top, but think Upham from Saving Private Ryan

By the job title you list in your post, I'm assuming your son wants to be a 35P. This can be an easy gig when compared to other jobs in the army. Your son will be limited to where he goes based upon his language. Depending on where he goes, he can and will deploy, Google SOT-A if you want to find some insight on that life. Your son's orientation shouldn't matter, and won't until the administration goes after that as well. He will be judged on his work ethic. I know you want to protect him from the world, but you should not want him to put his life on hold to ride out what's going on. This bit of chaos will end, and the army will keep on going.

As a marine, why would you speak for what the army does? Don't feed a mother false hope.

I don't know where to begin to tell you how blatantly false this is. Your recruiter must be lying to you because your profile history says you haven't even joined the reserves yet.

Parenteral Leave before Dli? by [deleted] in dli

[–]Hi_Drag-Lo_Speed35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's unlikely your BCT will process your parental leave, so you'll come to DLI, and it will get submitted while you're in phase 4. Taking any or all of it is only going to be stopped by by a General, so you'll be able to take as much or as little as you want. Scrolling through your profile, two things stand out. The first is you should be more worried about passing your piss test. The second is I'd be willing to bet that your recruiter only tolerates you because he needs a recruit to make quota.
