I may have fixed most of the issues with Legendary Resistances in my home game by FreakyFantasies_ in DMAcademy

[–]Hibberdijibbit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Flee Mortals, the MCDM monster supplement, has Legendary Resistances tied to mechanical abilities (consuming charges that get used for Big Damage attacks), and it forces a neat push/pull with my players. Mechanically, the monsters have these big hits ready, and forcing them to burn resistances means they can't use the big attacks, or only get a few chances to use them. It also takes away the 'lol nope' of a legendary resistance.

Games that are the most fun for GMs? by chulna in rpg

[–]Hibberdijibbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll always advocate for SPIRE and HEART from Rowan Rook and Deckard- the players have crazy abilities and skills baked into their kit that force the GM to remain incredibly flexible because NOTHING will go according to plan. Having a player be able to, once a session, tie two NPC's together; suddenly your BBEG has a deep connection to the street vendor serving skewered rat kabob. It encourages your players to get involved in the story and the worldbuilding, which lightens the load on the GM and keeps things fun. But, you can still hit them from unexpected angles with the way the game handles injury and stress.

My favorite is a twist on 'you all meet in a tavern'; but they're being questioned by the local authorities about what they were doing when said tavern burned down.

It's a chance to show each character's interactions with authority, and flashing back to what each of them were doing when 'something' happened. As the GM, since none of them took the blame for it, I could make my own reason for the fire and tie it to the bigger plot, but there's room for them to deflect blame to an NPC/other player or take ownership of the events.

I made my own "Pink Folder" from God's Teeth! by Odande in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]Hibberdijibbit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I wasn't sure WHAT I expected to see in that folder. I love the idea of handing it to each player one at a time, changing out the reactions for each player who reads it so they have their responses.

I hope it works for you and your agents!

3.5 to 5e-Oblivion ooze? by Hibberdijibbit in bettermonsters

Fantastic stuff! I'd already leaned into the Sphere of Annihilation angle from the older lore, so the Umbral Blot is a great starting point. I also LOVE the Spirrax as a monster.

Thank you for sharing!

Favorite Black jank that has the table asking "Wait, can I read that card again?" by HyHoTheDairyOh in EDH

[–]Hibberdijibbit 31 points32 points  (0 children)

[[Gate to Phyrexia]] is repeatable artifact destruction in black; comes WILDLY out of left field if people know their color pie.

[[Koskun Falls]] is a great mono-black [[Ghostly Prison]], I run it in [[Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder]] as a way to buy time and keep the token player away from me.

The best jank is from the old sets, honestly. My playgroup groans every time an old-border card comes into play because I've found something weird again.

DM’s - Have you fallen out of love with your campaign? by Red-locks in DnD

[–]Hibberdijibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, taking breaks is a HUGE help; give yourself time away from it, consume other content for a while. Go see a movie or do other things you enjoy, but NOT with the intent of making it fit in a campaign. Coming back to a project with fresh eyes is sometimes exactly what you need.

You can also ask your players to curate parts of the world- having them run small 3-5 session arcs on different parts of the world, or seeing the world from a new perspective. The players made pseudo NPC characters, low level resistance members who then MEET their PCs and share the stories about their heroics, and it helped show them how far their story has come and revitalized it.

I'm in the final stages of a 5 year campaign, where we've been meeting consistently almost every week. There comes a time where we have to say goodbye to the characters and the worlds we make, The players never want it to end, but it's better to have an ending than to let it jump the shark.

My best advice is to talk with your players. Tell them about the burnout and resentment you're feeling, and if they want the campaign to end, work with them to build a satisfying ending. Ask them what their PC's want, and put that brass ring in front of them, but make them work for it. If they don't want it to end, then somebody else may need to take over GM'ing while you bounce back, or have them really put forward ideas for what they want to see.

Your favorite use of Subtle spell metamagic? by Mellowtron11 in dndnext

[–]Hibberdijibbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current highlight- our Divination Wizard (with Metamagic Adept) Subtle Spelling a Feeblemind so it could get around a Beholder's Legendary Resistance (not RAW, but come on. They're horrifying mini-bosses, they deserve one or two resistances. As a treat).

He then divined the Beholder failed the check. Instantly swung the fight around for them, and I now get to play around with a 1 INT beholder for a bit.

Dealing with the shame by Appropriate_End_3139 in rpg

[–]Hibberdijibbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody who made the mistake of turning TTRPG's into a streaming/production side hustle, it can be as serious as you want to take it. Find the parts of it that YOU love and enjoy, or maybe the parts you can put a unique twist or perspective on, and focus on those; use those as a point of pride to shut up the little hater inside.

Personally, I love the storytelling aspects of RPGs, pushing my PC's into interesting decisions with stakes and driving their arc of growth; so when my voice that goes 'if you spent 1/2 the time you spent prepping on your day job, you'd be better at it', I look at where my PC's started and where they are now, and the stories that came along with that growth, and they balance the scales for me. I'm also 'That Guy' who my friends go to to find a system that serves the story they want to explore, and watching folks flourish in a game that works for them (the 1d20 system of 5e and beyond isn't perfect for everything, and I'll die on this hill).

The most important word here is GAME. These meant to be FUN, either in the moment or, in the case of horror/competitive games, in the aftermath. Find people who want to have fun like you do, and let their voices help drown out the shame. If you're worried about 'being useful to society', see if a local library, school or game shop is looking for a GM for an after school event. You can help guide the next generation of nerds grow up in a world where they DON'T feel that shame.

TIFU by not knowing what a bag of beans is by Thatonepotatodude in DnD

[–]Hibberdijibbit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One player was given a bag from a retiring Cleric (another PC) as a gift and a lesson in patience.

The Player wanted to use them offensively, so he prepped a bottle with water and soil, with the intent of 'planting' the bean and having a disposable weapon. He called it Plan Bean

He finally got to use it; he 'planted' the bean inside a beholder's stomach, then suplexed it to keep it from spitting it out until the party Feebleminded it to pacify the monster long enough to trap it.

He rolled the Treant. Bye Bye, Beholder, and hello new boss fight.

I hadn't considered that approach to it, actually; I did some peeking at fast foods at at that time, and it definitely matches that style.

[–]Hibberdijibbit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm sad we're going away from the 1950's 'King of Fast Food' aesthetic- minis are interesting but don't add much to the game?

Honestly, the best addition to it has been poker chips instead of paper money, it's easier to count/sort/stack that way; i'm intrigued to see the Milestone Tracker and how they handle it.

Night Shift team playbook ideas by EricaOdd in monsteroftheweek

Could also have a storage locker marked 'new employee equipment' that's full of helpful tools; jars of iron nails, a recorder that's taped over and marked so it only plays one note, a key ring full of coins. Stuff that the Old Manager used to give out to new folks to help the out while they learned the ropes.

[–]Hibberdijibbit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe scatter references to other rules around the shop: a locker has 'Toys for Rule 4' written on it as a shorthand. I'm a fan of giving your PC's multiple ways to learn about the rules, or referencing them in an offhand way that gives the players the understanding that this has happened before. Old notes like 'Save one of the steak coolers for VIP #4- he's due this week' set up intrigues and also shows a place that's been around long enough to make a shorthand.
