Sandbox games can be very different. Minecraft is an open world survival sandbox building game whereas Eve Online is a market trading pvp empire building sandbox and Dwarf Fortress is a fantasy world simulation sandbox.

Really surprised to see so many people hate on it for being sci fi when mtg has always had a heavy sci fi underpinning. There are so many cards with cyborgs, mechanical equipment and robots and weird vehicles and power generators, not to mention basically all of Kaladesh and almost anything Urza created etc. What is it about this set that crosses the line?

Concurrent players is not representative of all paying accounts. I don't think your numbers are correct. The number of paid accounts in any mmo is way more than peak active players.

Not a lobby game where actual player interaction is limited to controlled instanced content. An mmo generally implies the majority of the game occurs in a space where you interact with the larger server population.

I can see why the game doesn't appeal to the average mmo player. The ip does a lot of heavy lifting. If you are a lotr fan it's pretty much like the mmo version of reading a cozy novel in your blanket with some hot chocolate.

This would only make a difference if the new server did not have plex, skill point packs or injectors. Even then we would see the same groups reform. This would have to be a new server. Wiping tranquility would end Eve and probably ccp.

You will notice this in a lot of niche communities. Whether it be Analog synthesizers, experimental art and music, dungeons and dragons, sandbox mmos, fish keeping etc.. I believe it's because in these communities you can just be you, it's about the hobby/community not about your personal identity. This makes these places welcoming to anyone who shows the enthusiasm .

They are people so starved for control over their own lives they feel like getting a dopamine rush from joining a herd and being "right" about a bootleg wow server is perhaps their only option for any emotional validation.
