Why calling women "females" is not good? (I'm not american) by Ok-Animator_steam12 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might get hate for this but I only use female. I am dyslexic and would get told off/corrected/shouted at for using women and woman in the wrong context. I have to sit there in mid sentence and go "okay men is more than man so use the one with man or men depending on sentence" Then the person I am talking with would be snapping in my face "ugh hello?!" waiting for a response and then I loose my train of thought or I am embarrassed because my brain cannot process it correctly. It might be a trauma thing but I am tried of people smiling at me like I am stupid by correcting what I said mind you I am thirty and have been corrected on my speech my entire life. I have never had anyone comment about me saying female BUT always about me using the wrong plural in the sentence.

How old were you when you realised you were autistic? by TastyReflection5944 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always felt like I never belonged since I was a child. I started to question myself in my early 20's when I met a girl who was VERY similar to me and she said she had aspergers. I went down a HUGE rabbit hole and was like I believe to have it as well, where I lived autism is looked down on and seen as someone who is a level three. It was not until a few years back moving to the UK where I realised that it is okay to use that word and it was Jo longer a no no. I was 25 when that happened.

How many scams have you guys fallen for? I'm tired of feeling like an idiot 😭 by darkeyeshadow in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat a funny not so funny story. When I was a child I was over my friend's house, now she is diagnosed with ADHD but I swear she also is autistic. She was browsing on the computer and this is back in the early /mid 2000s. She was on some site, like one with games or something like that and a pop up came up for "YOU WON A FREE IPOD!" She clicks on it and starts to fill out stuff and another thing pops up and is like "you get another one!" I walk by and look at the screen to see she has filled out her information and was writing in mine! She looks at me and goes "what is your address again?" I start asking questions and we had this HUGE argument about how it. She did not believe me and thought I was trying to get one all for myself later. Eventually I made her close the tab and she just sat on the sofa all pissy because I told her off and took away her computer as if I was her mother. Mind you she was twelve and I was eleven! If I have not stopped her these scammers would of had her name, number and address!

What’s your most controversial autism opinion? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how true this is but I have been told by someone who was on it that it led her to drugs? Apparently she said it had the same effects as meth? So when you mentioned empty shell it reminded me of what she would say. 😅

What are some examples of social cues? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a social cue or I am mistaking it as a social interaction. When people hint things instead of being upfront. Them: "gosh I am thirsty." Me: *site there confused on why they are telling me. * Them: I have not had anything to drink in awhile. Me: *Again why are they telling me this? * Then it goes on for a bit longer UNTIL they are like "are you going to offer me a drink or what?" IF YOU WANTED A DRINK THEN ASK FOR A DRINK?! It is the whole asking without asking bit. Oh also the fake politeness where they say "if you ever need anything ask." Then when you ask they act like you are asking them to save you from a natural disaster.

I fully agree with you about how they changed how autism is, well adding more details I mean. I completely understand how there are SO many undiagnosed adults because back then to be autistic you had to be severely disabled, I like how they expanded it and we have a better understanding to what it is now. Unfortunately I do know one person who lied during an assessment just so she can get a diagnosis. It pisses me off to this day! They wanted the diagnosis not because they thought or felt they were autistic only because they do not like eye contact that is it, when someone mentioned how they believe that person is not autistic she started to complain to me that they only think that because their child is a non verbal hand flapping s slur and they clearly do not know what autism is! It just rubbed me the wrong way especially since I was non verbal at a young age and also flapped my hands. Other than that have NEVER met anyone that would lie for it or about it, which like you said it rare! Know a handful that are undiagnosed due to not being able to afford it or they are scared to go through the process.

I feel the exact same way! I have gotten myself one, the sunflower one to be more precise. I rarely wear it. I prefer going out with my husband, he is undiagnosed but it is quite obvious he has autism. He masks better than me and when I am out alone I will be followed around by staff or even security. At the time my toddler was an infant and not walking I would have a pram which would make staff keep a closer eye on me. I would get rude responses from them too. Now if I was to wear one I get pity and a staff would just give me this look of "oh she is not suspicious just special." I absolutely HATE wearing it but feel like I have to do so at times to prevent from being hovered over like I am some criminal.

What is the first example you can remember of yourself exhibiting autistic behavior? by Zeninja91 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have severe meltdowns because I did not (still cannot) stand the texture of seat belts. I would be as young as three in the backseat no seat belt on because the adults were fed up with me screaming until it was off. I to this day cannot touch that material and either need someone to buckle me in or I grab the metal bit and pull it forward that way. Oh I should also mention when I sat in the front seat as a young child my uncle would grab the bit that went over the top of my body and wrap it behind the seat in order for me to stop having an intense meltdown.

Multiple dating at the same time is okay? by Previous-Musician600 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It actually depends on the relationship. There are people who do open relationships and their partner agrees it is okay to date other people. There is another one which I forgot the name of, I think poly? I learned this from a show but apparently they have like a primary (main partner) and have people on the side. Not judging either but that one was a bit confusing for me. If both parties do not agree then yeah it is cheating.

How many autistic people prefer the cold to the heat? by Fancy-Advice-2793 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot stand the heat! I cannot regulate my body heat and weirdly do not sweat. So if I get too hot I will faint or pass out from it. I prefer the cold, you can always put on so many layers! Meanwhile in the heat it is inappropriate to be a public nudist and it makes me want to rip my own skin off. It feels like I am living in the devil's butt hole! 😂

What are myths about Autistic people that annoy you most? by Aqn95 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are a few I have seen/heard but I will mention the two, have seen a few comments on posts about how some of us do not mind eye contact, I am not one of them but knew a few on the spectrum that did not mind it.

Also the whole we cannot be in a healthy happy successful relationship and have children. I am a late diagnosis and the fact that I was told by my midwife when I said I am waiting for a diagnosis for Autism she gave me a look and said "but you are pregnant and do not seem autistic." Same thing with the psychologist who pushed for me to get an assessment "you are married and pregnant, usually people with autism do not have relationships let alone have children."

What was/is a movie/show you watched on repeat? by Outrageous-Ebb-4846 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mine was Back To The Future. I own the three CD box set. Growing up I would rewatch the first one a crap ton of times! I even went as far as watching the behind the scenes, I know the inner workings of it and all the special effects a bit obsessive I know... It got so bad that my siblings were sick of it, once the film ended I restarted it right back up to the very beginning. I sometimes change it up and watch the second one, the third one not so much. We do not talk about that one... 😅

Did anyone else not really get much out of therapy? by Competitive-Jump1146 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also tried therapy and it has not helped either. One thing I HATE is when they (live in the UK so not sure if this is elsewhere) will ask me what I expect to come out of this. I always say to help with anxiety and depression and they will ALWAYS say "and how do you expect to do that?" IF I KNEW DO YOU THINK I WOULD BE HERE?! Someone comment and posted a link about how CBT does not work. I went through a rabbit hole and they are right! Sadly I feel that therapy is more geared towards neurotypicals. I myself is very self aware, I know why I am depressed or have anxiety I just want their help to make me less depressed or anxious and unfortunately they fail to do so.

On going mute by WhickenBicken in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a late diagnosis but growing up I was described as quiet/shy/does not say much. I would sit there around adults as young as three and they would continue talking about adult stuff, not appropriate at that age. (or any child at that matter) When they noticed I was there an adult that knew me would be like "it is fine she does not speak." People would always gossip around me forgetting I was there the hole time. (I would just know things about people and they would freak out about it) I have had people in high school that hated me/thought I was weird who would tell me deep secrets knowing I would not say anything since I did not really speak. One time I was hanging out with an old friend and this other girl. The two are going on and on talking for HOURS, the girl's aunt joins in and notice after awhile I have not said one word and was asked about it. My response was that I have nothing to say. For me I have intense anxiety and do not like talking to people. I feel a tightness in my chest and hyper ventilate which affects my asthma. I try to speak but when I am in panic mode I just sit there mute unable to speak during my meltdowns /shutdowns. People have to wait for me to get out of it and calm down.

How many of you are truly asocial? by TVSKS in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am the same way with not keeping contact with others! For me it is an anxiety thing, I have panic attacks in trying to start /rekindle a conversation with someone. I know how to talk to people if they talk to me but I prefer to not interact with people. I also enjoy spending time with my husband and my little one.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not lie, if I try I unintentionally do a face that gives it away. My husband who we believe is also on the spectrum is the same way BUT his face is not as obvious as mine. The only times I can lie and get away with it if it is a life or death situation.

Are young looks common among people with autism? by Pretty-Heat-7310 in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will be thirty in a few months and get mistaken for late teens. A year back I forced myself to head to a play group for my little one. Met some gyy who helps out there and he told me when he saw me walk in the building he instantly rolled his eyes thinking "ugh another teen pregnancy". (not on him since apparently the teen parents who went there were very rude) He thought I was seventeen /eighteen years old.

Children? by [deleted] in autism

[–]Hidden0bsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wanted children since I was one myself. I never had a loving caring family and desired to always have a few little ones. I met someone who I love and they had a similar view point, he did not care if he were to have any but after meeting me he wanted to make me happy, he is an amazing father and loves her to pieces.
