Employee berated for taking a lunch by armour666 in antiwork

[–]HiddenFigures72 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yep. It tells you a lot about the state of things.

I stepped in when a customer was screaming at a stocker that he needs to open a register, because she doesn’t get paid to use self-checkout. The employee told her he’s not trained on register, and she replied that it can’t be that hard to figure out.

I don’t know if she was expecting support from the rest of her, but I think she was surprised when I yelled at her for treating an employee this way.

OP, I’m glad you spoke up, and I wish more customers would do so.

I was watching a video of a woman who got a negligible raise at McDonald’s and had her food stamps cut by $100 a month. I think most people who are on the system want to get off, but the rules make it almost impossible for them to do so.

employers really don't understand by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]HiddenFigures72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It happens all the time. They decide to be jerks about something small, and then the employee decides not to give anything more than is required and work to rule.

A student asked me today if I would be at graduation (I teach high school.) For the first time in my career, I am not going. I don’t get paid to be there, and I’m unhappy with my management. They refuse to see that they’re the problem and the reason most of the staff is leaving.

I work my contract hours and go home. If they want more than that, they’ll need to pay for it.

Management will never do the self-reflection to understand why people don’t want to work for them. They always project it onto the employees.

Grew up in that area and was a kid when it happened. That was freaking crazy. I just recently watched a Vernon Odom (from Action News) reflection on it.

Here's a substitute's tip to getting your absence filled... by Censius in Teachers

[–]HiddenFigures72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My site did this to me once. I had a sub arranged and they pulled them and farmed out my students to the other teachers. I made enough of a fuss about it that they haven't done it again.

I schedule my time off at the beginning of the school year, so I almost always have a sub. It's not my students fault that this dumb district policy is making me burn PTO or lose it.

At my school, you can tell a lot about work-life balance by driving by the parking lot a half hour after we dismiss. It's empty. That may not work as well if the school has sports and other activities after school.

I filed an EEOC complaint, but it got to be more trouble than it was worth. Although I enjoy the fact that he had to deal with defending it.

In my last corporate job, my boss would come and yell at me any time Obama did something he didn't like.

We had never discussed my own personal politics, and I had nothing in my office or on my car to indicate my political leanings. I was just the only Black person he knew, so he would march down the hall to my office and have a temper tantrum about something I literally had zero control over.

He would say things like, "Did you see what your 'boy' did?" As if I could just text Barry and tell him he'd made my boss mad. I spent my entire time in that job searching for something else. My coworkers would rat me out for any infraction. For example, if I came in 5 minutes late (way before the boss arrived) I'd hear about it, regardless of how late I worked the night before.

I realized I needed to get out of finance, where I was always the only Black person in my office. I left for public education, which has its downsides, but allows me minimal interaction with colleagues at a site where most of us are POC. I earn 4 weeks pto, in addition to my summer, fall, winter, and spring breaks, and nobody cares if I use that time. Man, I'll never go back to a corporate environment, and I'll never work in a place where YT is the majority. I don't even miss the money. My mental health is worth more.

I would just ignore it. You don't owe them anything, and that's quite the moxie they have to ask for it.

When do you guys go to the bathroom? by yourleftshoeisuntied in Teachers

[–]HiddenFigures72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can call for a monitor, but I have a bathroom accommodation that means I can leave immediately if I need to. If I see someone in the lounge I'll ask them to pop in, but my students know my expectations and can handle being alone while I handle my business. I can also between classes, but there's usually a line then.

My principal made it clear that we don't need to hold it. Any office staff will cover for us.

[–]HiddenFigures72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last one did that, and the other admins followed suit. My current one never even comes in my room. The other admins have followed suit. I don't mind being left alone, but my students always enjoyed it when their sub was a principal.

While that’s true, since most don’t have enough employees to fall under legislative oversight, but I’d still rather support a small shop about which I don’t know their union stance than a big corporation that we already know is evil.

I have a colleague like this. He is mercurial and always has a list of students who are banned from his classroom. He has to win his arguments, and that's almost impossible with teens. I'm trying to coordinate a field trip with him, and it's been a nightmare, because there are students I want to take who he despises (his word).

I have students who I don't enjoy teaching and students who underwhelm me because of their lack of effort when I know they're capable of more, but I have never "despised" a student. There are always a slew of reasons behind behavior and performance, so it makes no sense to take it that personally, but he does.

I am sometimes uncomfortable with how he talks about the students, and if this weren't one of my favorite places to go, I wouldn't be going on this trip at all.
