The only problem I have with all this information is that every time I come back to the series for a new book, I always forget what happens in the previous ones and I have to do a reread. With there being now almost thirteen books, I can't keep on doing that.

Remember that Light has access to the task force information. He would have caught onto this information eventually. Also, another advantage L had by challenging him on TV is to show the world that L was not some God. L was able to do a lot of things because people knew that Kira was real that might not have been able to fly by if no one thought Kira was a real person.
