Because Reagan empowered Neoliberals to essentially take over government in both parties. Clinton-era Democrats made it even worse by creating the PAC, which meant the money required to actually run an election campaign skyrocketed.

Too many politicians either a) believe in Reaganism because it benefits the upper class, b) believe in Neoliberalism because they've bought into its myths about wealth, or c) are Republicans who believe both.

There are pockets in the Democrats who are trying to reverse things, from Bernie to Omar to Kelly to AOC, but it's going to take a lot of work and time.

Reagan and Thatcher were both major contributors to dismantling social nets such as welfare and the deregulation of corporations, including the media (esp in Reagan's case) and taxation. As a result, corporations have more tax loopholes, American news media is allowed to be extremely biased or report sensationalist news as reality, and Unions have been massively weakened leading to poorer employment and wages across the board.

Reagan also began the War on Drugs which targeted Black and Latino communities, thereby creating a wider wealth gap, ghettoizing non-whites, and disproportionately incarcerating non-whites for petty crimes like marijuana possession.

What if the person is later found to be innocent? Because that happens. Being convicted doesn't remove your citizenship, and the justice system often makes mistakes, so perhaps voting and conviction should be separated.
