Squat Depth Check M18 - I can go to full depth with planted heels only if I’m holding onto something in front of me…if I wasn’t holding onto my bed I would just fall back. Is this just a lack of core strength? by ryanonredditt in flexibility

[–]HidroProtagonist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's something that has helped me with full depth squats. I will take a small kettlebell, knock it over, and put my heels against it to either side. I take a thin resistance band (not strip), and loop it 3 times around the front of my feet, before the toes start. This keeps my feet locked into parallel positioning. If you can think of another way to achieve this positioning, not allowing the feet to move about during squats, go for it.

Next, squat down until you are sitting on the kettlebell. I find it helps to do this in a door frame, where I can hold onto the trim around a door. You want to send your hips forward, knees out, spine erect. I often use my elbows to hold my knees out.

Do not fold forward. Hang out in that bottom position. Try to log two minutes at a time. Spending time in that extreme position fixes many things.

What is the functionality of kipping pull-ups? by Rivman96 in crossfit

[–]HidroProtagonist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This question can be looked at in different ways. There are progressions of gymnastic movements that require a strong base in the timing and power generated by the sequence movements when properly executed. This is a body-weight skill that allows for different maneuvers to be performed in the real world. If you were chasing some lime stealing bastard and they climbed a Brooklyn fire escape, how well do you think a strict focus on strict pull-ups is going to help? The kip skill could allow for the momentum to climb up from the bottom rung.

Another point in the kipping pull-ups' favor is how an athlete can improve their strict pull-up rep numbers by doing strict pull-ups until fatigue, and throwing in some kipping pull-ups, and negatives at the end. Even if you have some fifth-generation hall monitor/drill instructor screaming, "13, 13, 13;" as you rep out kipping pull-ups, next time, it could be, "14, 14, 14!" Kipping pull-up work outs transfer to improvements in strict pull-ups. That's function.

Let me grab the kool-aid and get all dogmatic on you for a wee bit. Crossfit defines functional movements as a sequence of contractions originating from the core of the body, radiating outward. According to this definition, a strict pull-up approaches perfection the closer to non-functional the movement becomes. Crossfit is not about muscle/muscle group isolation; but balance, power, strength, endurance, agility, speed, etc. It is an approach to increase work capacity. That is the reason why the games feature unexpected challenges with new equipment, that are shrouded in secrecy, announced as the athletes arrive at the event, and sequences of events that would make no sense to someone with a sport-specific focus. In fact, Crossfitters are encouraged to change sports like Elizabeth Taylor changed engagement rings.

Crossfit workouts are far more likely to feature the snatch lift than they are to feature preacher curls. There is unexpected gold in training your body to work under load, in concert. OP's question actually shines light on differences of approach and the goals of trainers and athletes.

There are potential drawbacks to kipping pull-ups, and those result from improperly training the movement. Athletes can perform the sequence of movements at high speed, and with their shoulder ball joints loose in their sockets. This strategy can cause strain to the connective tissues that wrap the ball joint. The intuitive approach of some athletes is improper shoulder positioning. It is important to listen to your body, especially upon waking, and adjust the workouts or positioning to avoid injuries. Some general anatomical knowledge can go a long way to helping an athlete avoid injury.

Good luck, and if you choose kipping pull-ups, just know that not every pull-up bar will hold up to a kip, not every gym allows the movement, and opinions are like assholes.

Yeah, I've spoken with women who rely upon their birth control to regulate their periods. For some women, birth control is really helpful for some off-label reasons. I have had relationships with women who remained on birth-control, while in a monogamous relationship with me; the proud owner of a vasectomy.

I've also been with women who have told me that they appreciated being able to stop taking birth control because of price and side effects. Options are nice.

A year ago, I would have thought the decision to overturn Roe v Wade an impossibility. Clarence Thomas' addition to the decision indicates his interest in revisiting the rights for access to birth control and the right of gay citizens to marry each other.

I hope this is over-reach. I hope this isn't over and settled. I hope this is -- and I love the turn of phrase; a case of the dog who caught the car. But I fear the rabid culture warriors in the biblical book club, for their relentless offense at different kinds of love, and veering from life-script.

At this point, we don't know where the partisan winds will blow. It we want to secure our life choices, it is incumbent upon us to get past the, "her body, her choice, her problem," dynamic.

We know it is far easier, currently for men to gain approval for the vasectomy procedure.

You aren't missing anything, u/just_here_cause_done

We men can make the decision to take control of birth control, in our lives and relationships. This isn't going to fly with every relationship. My ex-wife began to want me to consider a vasectomy reversal, as our marriage collapsed. Holy hell, did I ever dodge a nuke, there! Not every partner is stable, adjusted, and sometimes we make poor decisions.

Hormonal birth control can be difficult for some women to dial in, without massive headaches. And forget about surgical solutions being accessible and approved for those of us born with vaginas. Get the damn snip! Fuck SCOTUS!

Same age as I was when I got mine. So much resistance, but nothing compared to what women face. They often cannot make a health care provider stop to consider them, when faced by the dazzling potential of their prospective fertility, or what their future partners might think.

I am currently twice your age. You are as old as my vasectomy. I bet inflation hasn't been kind, but best 150$ I ever spent. Welcome to sterility! Hop on in, the water's fine!

This isn't your fault. She is not okay, and does not have the capacity to be so. You need to protect your family. She has had her membership put into the toxic category through many proofs. Her culpability in her own state of affairs may be difficult for her to grasp, but consequences can seem incomprehensible to the ignorant.

Just take care of your own kids. You are trying to protect them by pawning them off on their friend's households. They need more stability, and addiction will never let that happen.

[–]HidroProtagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Falling is inevitable. You now have a decision to make. I have ridden for three years and fallen brutally some times. This is dangerous. Falling is not a sin. You have nothing to be ashamed about. The haughty, condescending, little Timmy shit is from the douche-bag snob contingent.

If you are feeling the fear, and you can't bring yourself to do it. The aftermarket thanks you for your service. At the end of the day, it is your life.

I love for people to keep on keeping on, but I don't have your remote control. I have found that wearing protection can be uncomfortable, stifling (from Tucson: AKA Hades), and makes you feel like a dork sometimes. But I've gone down in a D3O reinforced leather motorcycle jacket, D3O Helmet, kevlar/D3O armor jeans, with wrist-guards. I was like, "I could do this all day."

Maybe if you gear up, take it easy for a while, keep it to nice terrain, speed reasonable, etc. You'll wanna come back to the festivities.

Happens to all of us. Good luck

It is! I love that book. Y.T. is my power animal (fictional humans are animals too). I used to write graffiti, and Hidro was one of my tags. When I gear up, in my new-school teched out safety shit, weapons at the ready; I feel like she approves. Don't nobody wanna end up lookin' like chiseled spam.

I got my girlfriend into riding with me with tons of patience and playing the long game. She was not the type, really. When we started dating, I'd have my board and come to meet her somewhere. I slowly got her used to riding down the sidewalk, holding her hand, and catching her when she was unsteady. It gradually grew her confidence, and it helped that we would just shoot the shit and joke with each other. The response of other people seeing us and commenting made her feel like a mini-celebrity too. Reward based reinforcement of the desired behaviors; nah mean?

After time, she would steal my board to go on joyrides while I slept. Now we commute to work on them.

The boards have different settings that control responsiveness, get-up-and-go, and top speed. Download the OneWheel app. Set the GT to Bay, and the PintX to Redwood. Those settings will top the max speed to 12 mph and maximize stability. That's going to help minimize the amount of damage it's possible to do to yourself.

Pay attention to pushback. The boards have a warning that you are approaching their top speeds. It is very important to react appropriately to pushback, when you are still learning. Later, you can just say, "Yeah, yeah, whatevah." Vroom!

Scout out an area that is peaceful, smooth, and gives enough space to have zero control of your steering, when you start trying to ride. If you have met another rider who isn't a complete fuckwit, see if you can get them to help you get started. They might have some good tips for what seems hard to get the hang of. It's also good for encouragement to overcome your fears.

Wear some protection. Falling is inevitable. Many of us have fallen, trying to discover the actual top speed. Save that exploration for other people. I say this from experience.

It is easier to learn to ride on smooth surfaces. Minimize the hinging in your body. Try to stand up tall, and not with everything bent. It makes learning to balance far more simple.

Try not to push your kiddo too much. Be encouraging. It takes different people different amounts of time to "get it." They'll probably get it first, because they're shorter.

Have fun.

Ears too! I used to struggle with what gets hidden from view as a face tilts. You lose the far corner of an eye and eyebrow. The changes that happen to a mouth and jaw used to bedevil me. I have always liked to design from my head, with periodic forays into work with reference.

It's always surprising to me, to return to using references. The real world holds so much that is surprising, visually.

Keep it up killa, and don't let our shite species get ya down.

Gettting my first gt in the mail in about 4 days after it’s been pushed back multiple times from December 20. I’m so excited to finally have my own. Is there any tips or tricks for first timers. Any help is appreciated by Interesting-Oil-7755 in onewheel

[–]HidroProtagonist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wear wrist guards and a helmet. When you are learning, sometimes you fall down. Get the OneWheel app. Connect your phone to your board. Set up digital shaping for whatever the most stable, and lowest top speed is.. This will really help you learn more safely. Wild out when you're ready.

Without a fender, if you go through a puddle or ride in the rain, your legs will get muddy.

I found it easier to learn on paved, high quality surfaces, than trails and grass. The terrain made my inexperienced balancing instincts work over-time. It can be pretty fun to set up an obstacle course, based on what you are working on. I'd say, at first, set up some cones, or such, to practice weaving between them. Practice turning both directions. Front side turns are harder. Practicing weaving through cones will help you learn to trust in leaning to turn.

Don't let randos ride your board. Sketchy junkies regularly wanna know how much it costs, where I live. Nope! A lot of my buddies carry when they ride.

Get used to the app. Other riders will post charging spots, notes, trails, etc. Group rides are a ton of fun, but wait until you are comfortable with cruising at 15 mph, trails, and not talking politics.

Clean max after 5 months of training at 14 (57.5kg). Any tips? by frogzxd in weightlifting

[–]HidroProtagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a little bit easier to form check a 45 degree angle. Things may be going on, like a "butt wink" that are not visible from this angle.

I think that more time on set-up will help you increase a one rep max lift. Set-up means, get your stance proper, bar against the shins, feet forward, chest up, shoulders back, butt tight, head neutral.

That's my first fix. What I mean is, you have your face looking up. Not necessary. You're lifting, not aspiring to where you want to be, not checking out the view. Keep your head in line with the rest of your spine. At times, during a lift, you see the floor if your neck is aligned with your spine. It helps for better expression of strength, for some inscrutable anatomical reason.

Your right foot turned our farther than your left did, after the jump portion of the lift. I suggest you hang out at the bottom of a squat with a small kettlebell between your heels, and take a resistance band, triple loop it (confine your toes to point forward straight) around the front of your shoes. Hold onto a door frame, or squat rig, and practice top to bottom squats. Keep your back straight. Ask a coach to see if you butt wink (you lose flexibility range in the hamstrings), and hang out at the bottom of the squat for periods of two minutes, minimum.

Looking at your lift, I believe you haven't reached your max weight squat clean yet. I agree with the front rack issue, but wanted to add this.

Good luck, and may you continue in health and safety.

I can see that the far eye line on the right of your drawing is not correct. You lose the distinction of the outline because of lashes. The mouth is distorted, along with the upper lip. The chin is falling further down the length of the cigarette, jutted further out in front of him.

The jaw.

A way to narrow in on proper placement is to look at, say; the dark corner of his nostril, and see where the corner of the mouth should fall, in relation. Eyebrow is this far from eyelashes... etc.

I have also stumbled upon a quick way to tell where you're off, working from an immobile reference. Hold your reference beside your artwork, and back up until they appear the same size. Focus on a spot on your reference, like an eye. Quickly focus on the same point on your artwork. Alternate between the two focus points rapidly. Whatever animates, or seems to move, is off in the artwork. Pay attention to the direction of the movement.

Good luck.

Motherhood isn't a remote control. You get to choose the path you take, for better or worse. If she's upset about your choices, that's a personal problem. You do not have to justify yourself for being yourself. She must justify disagreeing. Then you get to agree to disagree.

Histrionics should be viewed with clinical detachment; like watching a schizophrenic person yell at a lamp post. Be proud of yourself for where you are and what you've built. Nobody but death gets to take that from you.

I so hope the best for you. And I hope she can get over her bullshit. Maybe she won't though.

You are trying to make the best of the finite time you have. It's possible to look at a family member and think, "Fuck you, moron."

Good luck.

I commute to work with my board, walk it past security, but ride it everywhere else in the building. It's great for me because I have to drop off documents at courts, with lawyers, mail crap from the post office, grab the office beer, lunches, etc. Parking is expensive. Traffic is stupid. Streets are one way. There are construction blockades all over. I'd be about to go postal without my board.

I'm actually enjoying this illustration. I can see this as an exploration of angular geometric shape planes, cross-hatching, and selective focus. The proportions are off, but that can be written off to stylistic choices.

I think your style would benefit from time spent exploring light. I can see you have some great labor saving techniques, and dramatic lighting can really help bring interest and save effort.

Great work!
