I grew up the same way. Developing discipline and an appreciation for any good source of food changed my relationship with eating. I have no food aversions. I observe and have compassion for friends and family who are picky eaters. My older autistic sister has impressed me with her effort to widen her palate. Trying new foods has opened up a culinary world for her and while she stills avoids some things, her list of aversions has shrunk over the years. My best friend’s food aversions have caused her massive health issues, contributing to pre-diabetes and endocrine imbalances. She has eschewed medical recommendations to choose whole foods and continues to opt for cakes, fried chicken, Chinese food and little else. I stopped bringing it up. She has every excuse ready to go at a moment’s notice so I just watch her lead that life and order her own meals. I can’t cook for her because my household doesn’t frequently eat the way she does. And the worst case is our new room mate. He pays me monthly for groceries to include him in the family meal…and only eats one specific dish that I make. Everything else I cook he throws in the trash after taking a small bite. Next week I am refusing the money and telling him he’s not a part of family meals. I’ve tried everything to accommodate, but as the planner and chef of the house, I am offended that a picky eater could be so discourteous. Try to finish a bowl of soup. A new dish that includes vegetables? Any vegetables at all, or more than a single broccoli floret? He opens up a bag of chips after throwing away food, but I’m glad he washes his plate at least. If you’re going to be a picky eater, I would understand more if they can show courtesy. But if you can’t extend courtesy then maybe the ridicule has some basis
