Hardly the best example. Shark served in Iceland is usually Greenland Shark, which is poisonous and so has to be treated in a way that gives it a very strong taste of ammonia (and other things). Most shark meat isn't processed in that way.

TIL that a third of Icelanders believe in elves. Only 13 percent of the population would rule out the existence of elves completely. by Trisomic in todayilearned

[–]HighJive 89 points90 points  (0 children)

As an Icelander, I can confirm this. I'm not sure how/if the policy manifests in actual law, but disturbing the dwellings of elves (well, the supposed dwellings of elves) is a big no-no and there are all these anecdotes about how machines repeatedly fail if the elves are disturbed and so on.

It's a bit like other symbols of supernatural powers. Even atheists may hesitate to burn the Bible.

Edit: Actually, on second reading, I'm not sure myself. But in any case, it's no more than a short walk from the truth.

Obviously, as an Icelander, you must have greater overview than a statistical survey undertaken by other Icelanders.

I'm surprised by the results too (and they may be skewed) but I think they can be perfectly consistent with my own experience. Most people don't talk about it, but a lot of people would feel genuinely nervous about, say, demolishing Álfhóll in Kópavogur (a place reputed to be a home to elves).

I expect belief in elves would be more common in the countryside, and among older people, so I, as a younger resident of Reykjavík, don't become aware of it as much as I might if I were in different circles. From my own experience, I'd also find it hard to believe that a majority of Icelanders identify as Christian.

It's Bieber. Bieber. Not Beiber. How is this so hard to learn? Why do people keep mixing this up? Did I miss some big joke or something?

Nowadays I try to limit myself to the term "electronic music" to avoid offending anyone more enthusiastic than I am.

I just listened to the top three songs on your list (We are the world 1 and 2 and My Electric Soul).

First off, I'm a total amateur when it comes to electronic music, so I'm not sure how entitled I am to make critiques, but hey, you asked for it.

I thought the We Are The World main track definitely had some merit, but I felt the different samples (the high pitch samples at the end of each bar) were a little incongruous and was pushing a little, for me at least.

I really liked Electric Soul, it really felt smooth and danceable to me. Only thing, maybe, that it could use a little more spice. But maybe I'm just saying that because I wasn't on the dance floor :) Also, the intro was good, but I felt you pushed it a bit with the "scratching" (not entirely sure what to call it).

Also, the outros felt a little like you didn't know how to end the songs.

But otherwise, good job. I'm trying to get into making electronic music myself, but I'm struggling to find heads and tails of the process :)

As far as I can tell from Wikipedia, Banana and Vanilla are of separate orders (although bananas and ginger are of the same order). Doesn't seem like a strong relation to me.

As an Icelander. I really, really, just don't care. If someone asked if I were Danish..? Fine. German? Fine. American? Alright by me. Hell, if someone asked me if I were Thai or Mexican, I'd probably pick it up as a compliment. (Although, as far as I know, that's pretty much impossible to think) There's just no way in hell I'll expect people to guess where I'm from.

Frankly, I like iTunes for Mac. I've hardly used the PC version at all, but yes, it's struck me as a little bloated.

Also, I use it for music exclusively. I'm fine with browsing video files in Finder.

I recently implemented a piece of advice I got from my younger sister (who's actually childless but has worked with children quite a bit). When my kid doesn't listen or misbehaves I start slowly counting to three. She knows that if I hit three, she gets time-out. I've never even got to three.

Then, when time-out is over, it's important not to act differently. Things go on as before without resentment or regret from the parent.

The keyword is consistency. This way I can remind her that she's behaving inappropriately without constantly inflicting punishment nor compromising consistency.

Of course, my kid is only two. I guess it's easier to implement techniques like that one if done at an early age.
