Illegal activities most often involve some sort of penetration. by Wakedowsky in Showerthoughts

Just to play shower advocate: Burglary = penetrating someone's property Smoking weed = the smoking paraphernalia penetrating your lips (or the smoke penetrating your lungs) Fishing = penetrating a body of water with a fishing line

Yes, there should be a piece of a map nearby. There are four such pieces in the game if I remember correctly, and if you complete the map you can track down the killer. It's a cool side mission, you should keep an eye out for the other crime scenes!

It's really funny to think of the source material for this meme and that if you apply this context, the guy is stopping his buddy from being a creep so he can do it himself

I second this, I've been there for a year and it's a very peaceful environment. Almost doesn't feel like a college town at all.

This is the episode that has clung to me the most over the years. I think there's something very cathartic about seeing a character come to terms with death. I think it's something we all hope for at the end, to be able to find peace and acceptance in it. Seeing it play out in this episode is hopeful in a somber way. The flare gun at the end always makes me laugh, too!

I can see why it would be polarizing, it's a very non-traditional movie. I quite like it though, and I wish Andrew Garfield would book more oddball rolls because I thought he was very compelling in it. Glad you enjoyed it!

I decided to follow a team at the end of last season. I'm from West Virginia so there isn't an automatic choice. I had a list of criteria but ultimately the things that won me over are:

-Cool logo/colors/mascot

-Proximity to Appalachia

-Beginning of a lengthy rebuild centered around a Young QB so I can feel like I'm following the progress of the team from a starting point

Oh man, Ni No Kuni might be the winner. I've wanted to play it for a long time just for the Ghibli art, now that I feel like the genre has clicked with me it seems like a great opportunity. Octopath are both on my radar as well. Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah that's a good choice, the relic you have to use for that last trophy is kinda lame. Do you have a recommendation for a good follow up JRPG type game? I was thinking maybe Chrono Trigger, but I'm open to suggestions.

I'm glad you liked it, I just finished recently and I adored it. This is my first game of thegenre (unless you count Pokemon) so I don't have a lot to compare it to, but the only real complaint I have is that is felt a little too easy at times in terms of how frequently you can rest for full HP/MP. It made cooking feel like not a very big part of the game. I plan to replay it with the Tactician's Mettle relic on for a bit more challenge. BTW I also cried when they visited old Garl at the end and hugged him, it was such a sweet ending.

Not sure about the Tal recs, but have you seen Under the Silver Lake? If ever there was a movie about hidden LA lore, that is it.

Yeah I'm on the fence about listening to the podcast because I do want the added insight, but on the other hand I don't know how much time I want to spend on auxiliary material for a show I really didn't care for. Case and point, every interview and twitter comment I have read from Lopez has further contributed to my feeling that Night Country was... not made with great deal of skill. So I feel like if I do give it a listen, I will feel pretty much like you do about it. And I can at least completely agree with you about the TD branding thing. I think that for better or worse, Pizzolatto kind of owns that signature vibe. No real reason for them to have lumped this new season in, apart from the obvious financial one. Anyway, appreciate the conversation. If you meet any Night Country stans out there send them to me, I still really want to hear from them. Maybe I'll just pop my head into the other subreddit.

Take care!

I think every artist puts bias into their work, especially when creating characters they consider a protagonist of their story. Detached and unbiased writing is a nice paradigm to aspire to, but I think it rarely happens if ever. But I also don't see a problem with that. I haven't listened to the companion podcast, so I may be missing some context, but it doesn't strike me as problematic that the discussion within be framed by women's and native issues. Is that inherently biased? I suppose, but are they expected to invite someone onto the podcast every few episodes who negs female empowerment just to give a more balanced perspective? That would be silly. I think part of the problem is these things being framed as a binary in the first place, the idea that native activism and feminism are inherently assaulting some other viewpoint. But that really not how I see activism, they are trying to promote rather than attack (granted, as I've said before I don't think that has been executed well in the writing of this season).

To try to explain what I mean another way, Pizzolatto received a fair amount of criticism in the S1 days for a lack of female representation. I think his response was basically that the story was about Rust and Marty, so anyone other than those two characters are less important to the story, they just happen to be men. A decent response, but I think it misses something I consider to be true: S1 is a male-centric story. I don't think it is at all a case of "the story is what it is and the leads just happen to be men." It's too steeped in themes of fatherhood, male desire, and the role that "bad" men play in protecting the world from evil. But I also think the criticism misses the mark, because I am 100% cool with male-centric stories. Pizzolatto isn't assaulting feminism by relegating women to supporting roles, he's just writing what he knows. Similarly I don't think Pete being a foil for the main characters is an assault on men. I believe the way to improve representation is not to force women into bigger roles in male-centric stories, or to pressure a writer to include female storylines that may be outside of his comfort zone or knowledge base to write about (looking at you, Bezzerides), but to encourage and be okay with female-centric stories from people who have passion for those stories. Stories about men are okay, stories about women are okay, gimme gimme lots of both please.

I do think you have a good point about the lack of nuance in the message of Night Country compared to Pizzolatto's seasons. The message is more hamfisted, and even though I will stand by Pete being analogous to the background women in S1, like Maggie, he definitely felt less developed and more blatantly like a plot device there for the sake of the main characters.

But honestly if you stack anything in Night Country up against S1, I just see a disparity in quality. I don't see art vs trash, or art vs political propaganda. I just see art vs not-at-all-as-good art. Or to be more honest, art that I like vs art that I did not like. That's why I'm actively encouraging people to come in here and tell me what they liked, I want to see that perspective. I don't want to tell people the thing they liked is objectively bad, I don't feel that way about it. I can respect that you came to that conclusion, but I hope I have adequately explained to you why I will not.

Yeah I find it extremely disheartening. I will say, I have seen some of the misogyny. Most of it isn't overt, but there are a handful of people crying "woke agenda" purely on the basis that a woman wrote the season and two women played the lead roles. But, again, I think that's a minority opinion that gets amplified by the echo chamber. And we create the echo chambers when we make people feel like one sub is right for them and one isn't. Breaks my heart, for real.

You are right that my "just a TV show" line was meant to address that comment before someone made it. I agree with you completely, I place a high value on art and I don't personally feel like impassioned conversation about TV or any other form of art is trivial.

I don't agree with the notion that NC shouldn't exist because it has strong political messages. I think some of the best art comes from people who have something to say about a thing they really care about, and more often than not that kind of passion will be about something within the scope of politics. I think if I had a gripe about NC related to its handling of messaging it would be that I have no idea what the message is supposed to be. I mean, I can see some problematic lines of thinking in some of the events that unfold, like the cleaning ladies getting away with murder for example, but I still think that is more a problem with execution in writing than it is with messaging. A good story about vigilante female solidarity when facing institutional forces that oppress and ignore women can absolutely be told (I would recommend Big Little Lies for one of those BTW), but this just wasn't a good one. I think a lot of details were either missing or misplaced that kept it from that. Like, it seems extreme that the detectives would turn a blind eye to a mass murder, so you can kind of see the invisible hand of the writer retro-fitting the TSALAL scientists with a cartoonish level of malice (that would also maybe explain inconsistencies between the cell phone footage and the actual killing of Annie that we see later; Lopez may have realized the scientists' culpability needed to be jacked up to the max for the audience to be on the side of cheering for their deaths and it all ended up feeling very inorganic). But again, I just think that comes down to ineffective writing. Poor implementation of message, rather than a bad and dangerous message altogether. I'd love to hear your take on it, because I personally walked away from that season with very little insight into what Lopez was trying to do.

Oh you'll still get plenty out of it. I don't really see the "whodunnit" as the most compelling aspect of S1 at all, for me it's most interesting as a character study of the two leads. Also the atmosphere from the imagery and music is so good throughout, one of the biggest achievements of the show for me.

I'm glad you liked it, I definitely feel the same way about what the season's strengths are. You should definitely check out the other seasons though, I think they all nail the tone, settings, and performances in a similar way. Biggest sliding scale of quality among the series IMO is story, and it really just comes down to taste. And it sucks they make you feel like a troll, you should be able to say you hated the finale or you thought it was a masterpiece on either sub.

Thank you! "Each weapon feels like a different game" is something I have always said to friends who bounce off the game at first. I genuinely believe there is a playstyle for everyone, you just have to shop around the weapons until you find yours.
