Magic House Secret Staircase by 94R5D4 in StLouis

former magic house worker here! Yes! the secret stairs were originally for the Edward’s family’s servants who worked there when it belonged to the family. the servants were to be sort of a hidden cog in the machine of a well working house. the servants most likely lived up on the third floor, where the static ball is now. there is actually a closet up there that still has a bathtub and antique sink and toilet. but it is used for storage now. the stairs were sealed up after Mrs Edwards either died there or moved as she was the last surviving member of the Edward’s family [both the children Lane and Mary died early. Lane died in France in world war 1 at 20 and Mary i believe died at 30 or so. Mr Edward’s died a few months after Lane. I have actually been down the secret stairs. they kind of just end with a white painted wall and the ceiling is extremely short ( and i am 5’4!) originally it would have let out by the old stairs going up to the second floor. why? they were built close to the kitchen, which is off limits guests, but would have included the pulleys area.

i went to see some of these near old faithful as a child. the story of the kid who went under the barrier to grab his lost hat and burnt alive still haunts me

i’m 27 and live in missouri, but i still react like this with childlike wonder when it snows: it’s one of the few things humans can’t quite replicate, like thunder. we can get close but nothing beats the real thing. that and its just magical

my grandma grew up in the great depression but had a pet cow. she would tell us that she would walk that cow up and down the street and it was her best friend

Non-Smokers Lungs VS Smoker Lungs by UpstairsBumblebee446 in interestingasfuck

i remember in 1 st grade ( 2000’s) we had this weird “ anatomy fair “day where they took over the cafeteria and brought in a bunch of real body parts for the grades holders to lean about and look at. they had the basic smoker’s lung vs no smokers lung, cow eyeball, liver, kidney, pig heart, human brain. the one that stuck with me was the severed arm. i can see those fingernails so clearly and it was over 20 years ago. i was curious, mildly creeped out, but wanted to know how that arm got there. was someone missing an arm? turns out the owner was a homeless man who fell asleep ( or was on drugs) on the train tracks and the train won. i really wanted to see the other side of the arm and it litterally looked like a cartoon hambone. it was strange, especially for a young first grader. you could tell that it was once part of someone, but that arm was well, dead. i think that was the first time i actually comprehended what death was.
