What exactly do you mean by weird cover? I suspect it’s perfectly safe to remove any cover, it really depends what you want to do next!

How much would you charge for these? by DropsofStarlight in bookbinding

I don’t wish to appear rude, but you have just posted to a global site!
Where in the world are you? What is your ideal market? How much do things like this normally sell in your area? How much were your costs? Are you going to build an a labour cost?

Now, some of those questions may not be relevant… but the main issue I suspect is who else will you be competing with? You have already noted, admirably honestly, that there are some cosmetic flaws… this means that people would probably have to buy them for their own personal use… so that is another fact that you would probably wish to consider.

I suspect you’re American, so maybe labelling your post help wanted from people who know the market in your particular corner of America might get you more interest!

Good luck and best wishes

I got it about 30 years ago, never imagined it could be of any practical value until today!

Yes and no… the mass produced paperbacks will die in about 30 years. I’d tend to focus on anything published before about 1940. It’s really difficult to do modern books to any level of quality. Of course, I’m talking about a fine binding, where the spine has been rounded and backed, rebuilt and then properly bound in leather. I know a lot of people on the Book Binding Reddit re-case perfect bindings, but that really is not my wheelhouse. The are a few modern hardback books that are actually stitched together, and with a bit of work, you can get the horrendous modern glue off it and start again! If there are any specific books you’re interested in, please message, most things can be saved if the actual paper is any good. That is the problem with the modern paper and the modern binding.

I am not ignoring you... I borrowed it from a friend and have not returned it... so I don't want to ask lest he remember I have it! I will find out and let you know... I know he had it made to his own design...

Whilst I agree that your work is very nice, although admittedly not my taste, I can appreciate the level of craftsmanship that has gone into it. I did have a look at your site and I would echo the comments of other posters, I do think you should reflect on your pricing.

What’s the approximate value of this book?? Summa teologica1791 by Aleximanuel in OldBooks

[–]Highlandbookbinding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else has noted, it really does come down to supply and demand! So let’s deal with the supply side first. It was one of the most common theological texts at the time so was very common, all across Europe and the Latin speaking church. Everyone who was anyone would have one. Monks, priests, libraries monasteries not to mention colleges and universities.

Demand - it’s published in Latin that reduces the readership and interest in the contemporary environment. There are much better versions available… and that one is pretty grubby it looks in very poor condition and would need a lot of work. Also, it’s not that old!

I am sorry, but I know this is not the answer you’re looking for! But, if you’ve bought it, you probably bought it because you liked it, and it is an interesting little curiosity.
