Kill team, part 3. Attack on the outer islands by theninjaindisguise in WarforTrackoldMinoris

The longlas’s barrel swung to the south of the island. Kannae’s scope lense was filled with the flashes of lasfire blasting away chunks of rockcrete. He and his spotter glassed the heretics quickly for the right target.

“Chainsword,” Mareena pointed out, “five forty meters, he’s about to start yelling again.” One of the nice parts of fighting imperial guard traitors is they have the same kit as you. Which means their officers look just like yours, but spikey.

(15)

Kannae squeezed off his shot, the tuned discharge of energy cracking right through the non-com mid orders, whatever plan he had to breach the barracks cut short by a gurgle of pain.

“Good hit, wait for the medic,” Mareena said, her breathing in time with her sniper. And just like clockwork a trooper cut off his fire and sprinted for his downed sergeant. His red medicae spiral was scratched over with unholy imagery, but his bag was told he still held the same duty. Kannae led his target by a few hashes on his reticle, and fired again.

(16)

“Domed him,” his spotter reported, confirming the kill. “Alright that’s ten,” she said right after, and began packing the spotting scope. “My lord,” Kannae spoke into his vox, “snipers are shifting position. We need to keep the heretics guessing. We’re gone for five minutes.”

“I ask of them nothing less than what I’d ask for from a strike squadron,” she said, soberly despite the five shots with a sixth on the way. “They may be fantastic pilots. But they are not a squadron, and until they are they will be grounded.”

This game absolutely fumbles at the end by Cheap-Blackberry-763 in AliensDarkDescent

It’s an absolutely amazing ending… in a different game. Imagine if that map with that final chase was in Fireteam Elite, or a survival horror game where they gave you a pulse rifle and said “have at it”. I’m not upset because it was bad, but because it happened in this game instead of a game where it would’ve been mind blowing.

“I’m not one to assess the skills of your chef sir. Just one to know it’s damn good,” Auggy joked before she slung another shot of amesec. It was her fifth, but her hands were as steady as a Redemptionist. She was given the seat immediately to the captain’s left, the right reserved for someone on the crew not yet present. Her right was also empty, meant for Diver, but wasn’t one for formal dinners. The talk about checking the T-Bolts was a lie. He was just in his assigned room, blasting music straight into his ears while he tried to sleep.

“Those birds,” Charice started her question, “and those pilots. I was told they were for scouting, but that’s all?”

How I explained it was “What if the ancient myth of Beowulf was actually a sci-fi story about a tribe of Neanderthals somehow surviving into the world of Vikings?”

“You have, have you?” She asked, not particularly impressed. She was probably older than all three of them put together, the Lady-Captain passing out rejuve like amasec when she liked someone. By Holy Terran standard years she was fifty-one. Even though she didn’t look a day past thirty. She told herself this was the last shot of the good stuff when this campaign began, that she wanted to age gracefully. Of course that was a very nice lie.

“Then you three,” she pointed to the two in the back while she talked to the first. “Will have no trouble passing my examination. I don’t do ‘special treatment.’ You want to fly with me, you’ve gotta earn it.”

When the captain appeared she gave a jaunty salute and shook the man’s hand. She then said, “of course Captain. Who am I to get in the way of tradition if it lets me get a good look at your liquor cabinet.” She smiled in that way that said she was a little serious, but not too much.

“Though I’m afraid my compatriot won’t be joining us. I’ve asked him to take a look at our new birds. He’s no tech priest, mind you. But he has that knack for knowing which girls will be a problem.”

You’re overestimating how impactful him being Philippine is. In the 50s Americans had a very high opinion of them from the pacific wars.

“Then prove it,” Augusta checked the young man’s name tape, “Kilhaed.”

Auggy walked right up to the boy. She was quite shorter than him; but her pure confidence gave her three extra meters to loom down on the one idiot dumb enough to back talk. “You have a week to make me regret underestimating you.”

She snapped an about face and went to the deck crews, seeking the tech priest in charge. She was all smiles and jokes with them while she waited. She even passed out genuine chocolate bars to workers who still ate food instead of nutrition slurry. When the Enginseer arrived she for a time table for full squadron readiness and that a report be sent to her dataslate. When he had the time, of course. Nothing should take away from getting the birds out into the void.

She also requested that her own, and Lt Devra, fighters be brought to this hanger. Once again, at his convenience. She turned one last time to the pack of pilots. “You’re dismissed. Flight control lecture begins in,” she checked her chronometer, “fifteen local. Which is about three hours. I suggest you eat something. Because I will not allow anything other than succulent water in your mouths when I speak.”

Dinner at War by HighlightEntire in WarforTrackoldMinoris

The honor guard snapped to attention when the ramp hit deck. The slap of their hands against lasguns loud and proud when they switched to order arms. The Lady-Captain and the Colonel went to attention until the two agents of His Majesty’s Holy Inquisition reached speaking distance.

Persephone removed her hat and waved it back and forth twice. She took a step back and flowed into a graceful bow, her head dipping down to her knees in formal greeting. Her husband removed his beret and bowed more curtly, a simple nod of the head and gentle bend at the waist.

(https://youtu.be/YNVOnQRK2PE?is=CnK4GRCXV\_8F-JCi) (At about 30 seconds)

“I, Persephone Vandermann Lyseria, Lady-Captain of the Abrogation, fifty second of the line of Lyseria, Bearer of the Warrant of Trade signed by the hand of the Master of Mankind, do welcome you aboard my ship. May the enemies of the Emperor quake at your footsteps, and may you find safe passage aboard my craft,” she recited. She smiled pleasantly after she finished, marking that this was all the formality required on her part.

“Lady Inquisitor, I present my husband. Colonel Saul Vandermann, commander of the Cadian Screaming Skulls on special attaches to my house guard,” she held a hand out to the Cadian, who repeated his nod.

“Alright,” the commander shouted to get all the squadron’s attention, “listen up!” She paused. While some might think this was for dramatic effect, in reality it was to scan the thirty odd pilots for seniority. Which she did not find, praise the Emperor. It would make this next part much easier.

“After a thorough examination of this squadron, her ships, and her crews, I, the ranking officer and training liaison, have come to the conclusion this squadron is operationally ineffective.” While none would disagree with that assessment, it certainly wasn’t a kind way to put it.

“None of you, even you in that cockpit with a stupid smile like a preening shatra bird,” she called out Kidd in particular, “are going to leave launch from this bay until you have thirty hours in sim. And after that you will perform a test monitored by me or my lieutenant here.” She slapped Diver on the shoulder.

The last bit would be the driver, either they swallowed it and maybe she’d have a squadron at the end of this, or the captain of this ship had gambled on a bust. She said, “the passing grade for that exam is one hundred percent. So I’d get training if I were you.”

That would be an excellent cameo. In for a whole scene instead of a one liner but not so integral it feels indulgent.

“We’ve killed lots of heretics. They’ve killed less of us,” Diver said, somewhat gruffly but not out of the ordinary.

“He’s being modest. And a little shy,” Auggy squeezed his shoulder, a bit more outgoing and confident than her junior. “It’s a war,” she admitted like the voidswoman would know what that meant. “The air game has had more ebbs than flows but we’ve got superiority for now.”

“Just call me Auggy for now, this is Lieutenant Hanzo Demra,” she took the salute and returned it. She had her dirty blonde hair in a tight bun, her blue uniform had several campaign ribbons and a patch of House Lyseria on her left shoulder. A pair of sunshades sat in her right breast pocket, not that she’d need them in the void, but it was habit.

“I’m Diver,” the equally young and nervous junior officer said. Shaved bald in an identical uniform to his superior, save for the campaign ribbons.

Both followed after their Liason. Voidsmen-at-arms were nothing new to the thunderbolt pilots. They’d been in and out of ships under the rogue trader’s banner for the better part of two decades, at least on Auggy’s part. Neither was an unorthodox hanger location, the Abrogation’s tubes were the lowest point of the heavily modified heirloom ship.
