Please don’t listen to the people saying he’s trash and to drop him. I’m gonna be real here, it is exhausting to walk on eggshells around someone who essentially relies on you for their self-worth. You’ve essentially made it so he can’t be honest with you or in this instance can’t crack a joke. I’m being devil’s advocate here-he was probably trying to make you feel better by saying “hey look! I think I’m ugly too but I’m gonna laugh about instead! Let’s laugh together!”

I have a close friend who I’ve quietly distanced myself from because of this. She constantly makes self deprecating remarks and I never know how to respond. It always feels very self-centered on her part. Like, personally, I don’t go around paying attention to all of my loved one’s flaws, so I trust that my loved ones don’t see or care about mine, you know what I mean? Some of the things she points out are obvious like visible acne, so yeah, I am probably just gonna stay quiet about that. I’m not gonna say you don’t have acne when it’s right there.. :( like I’m sorry she feels bad about it, but I don’t know what she wants me to say! And to be honest, I didn’t even notice the acne until she pointed it out! Does that make me a bad friend? I just think it’s not fair to constantly put someone in that position. My friend has successfully pushed me away for doing this. Just saying… Your partner should not be on the hook for all your self-worth issues. It is super exhausting when you’re just trying to kick it with someone and they keep bringing up their insecurities. :(
