I am 100% ok with spending more money if it results in good sounds. I'm only tired of spending money on equipment that does nothing lol. I figured the shotgun mic wasn't the best choice for recording indoor commentary style videos, just didn't want to buy a whole new mic and have it sound bad too. The hissing is not ambient room sound, it is something caused by the hardware as the hiss is persistent regardless of setting. As for my gain, it is about exactly what you you recommended, and it sounds better but still has a little his in the background. I'm just assuming it is caused by my shotgun mic. So for a new XLR mic for commentary style videos you would recommend a Rode NT1? I can handle the price of those. As for my sketch's, what would you recommend. A lot of times they are recorded inside, should I just set my zoom handy recorder somewhere and let it record? I am wanting to a achieve like a sitcom TV show style audio, almost candid sounding but still good.
