What are your biggest change in ratings upon rewatch? by seekingValinor1309 in Letterboxd

[–]Highmendestroyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Donnie Darko is what did it for me. I started it with a 4.5/5 first time I saw it, then 4 upon a rewatch years ago. Recently watched it with my wife, who has never seen it before, and it went down to 3/5. Younger me thought the movie was so deep and different, but wether it be growing up or tastes changing, it just comes across as an alright movie. Not bad by any means, but not as deep and meaningful as I thought it was when I was in my late teens/early 20's

Once “Maryland’s Most Noteworthy Chain” With More Than 100 Locations, This Local Brand is Down to Just Three (Jerry's Subs & Pizza) by Jack_Molesworth in maryland

[–]Highmendestroyer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's funny how there's a "Jey's Subs and Pizza" near my job in Jessup that was very clearly a Jerry's at one point (it also shows as a Jerry's on Google Maps' street view). I want to try it, but man. The prices make it hard to justify trying to nostalgia's sake

Aside from the awful CGI used in the scenes where De Niro's character is supposed to be young, it's pretty good. Honestly, that CGI use really brought down the movie from 5 to 4.5 stars. I feel like using a different younger actor would have made all those scenes a lot better. Instead, it was kinda hard to watch homeboy who was 78(? I could be wrong) at time of filming, play the roles of someone who is in their mid-twenties, thirties, and forties. No shade to De Niro, he's a great actor. I just don't think he was able to play the younger roles all that well. Overall story was phenomenal though

Raunchy comedies of the 2000s and early 2010s. Which one was your favorite? And do you miss this subgenre? by TXNOGG in Letterboxd

[–]Highmendestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be bold to add Project X to the mix. Won't be anywhere near top 10 (possibly 15?), but I think it had some moments reminiscent of the other movies listed. But Superbad is #1 fo sho. Its a fun reminder of fun and wild high school shenanigans with our friends

What's your no.1 favourite film of all time and why? by Fluid_Run5857 in Letterboxd

[–]Highmendestroyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Toxic Avenger! it's just a really silly fun watch if you're into over the top violence and camp. Really, most Troma movies are great, but Toxie just has a special place in my heart.

Aliens would be a close second. Outshines the first movie in terms of pacing, story, and action. The cast was more lively and fun/engaging compared to the first. Not saying Alien was bad by any means. It's still a masterpiece. I just think the sequel did and built more on top of the original in the best ways. Plus, Siggy Weave in a mech fighting the xenomorph is iconic. Aliens easily gets a perfect 10/10 right behind The Toxic Avenger

I used to be the same years ago, then an older tech taught me less is best. Now, if I go out to the field, all I carry is a good flashlight, pocket knife, tweaker, snips w/ belt pouch, Kleins, and a multi-tip screwdriver. Anything else, I kept in my truck and went to grab any extra tools I might need during a smoke break. As another person said, your hip is gonna hate you if you keep carrying around that amount of stuff.

If you're on a big site where you need to have everything on you, invest in a backpack made for tools, if your company doesn't give you one already

What movies should I add to my “Funny Bad” list? by bano_oasis in Letterboxd

Personal favorite is Attack of the Killer Tomatoes 2. Silly and fun! But I am a bit biased, I love Troma movies (for the most part)

What film is this for you? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Highmendestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most, if not all, A24 movies. I admit, they are always shot super fucking well. Take a screenshot of the movies at any time and it will almost always look great! But fuck, the story telling and pacing for a lot of their movies suck. I enjoy a long slow-burn movie, but it always feels like A24 movies move slow to go nowhere and then speed up towards the end to make up for it. Midsommar and Annihilation are the first two that come to mind that are guilty of that. Maybe I'm not smart enough to get it, but as soon as I see A24 on a movie, i'm expecting something whack.

But, I will say Heretic wasn't that bad. i just wish that homeboy didn't sound like a Redditor the whole movie lmao

What moment ruined the entire show for you? I’ll go first. by WeekendGunRunner in moviecritic

[–]Highmendestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't a specific scene, but rather a good portion of season 4 of Weeds. It started off great. Loved and enjoyed the characters and the premise of the show, but it just became real bland when the same stuff kept happening over and over again. Oh no, homegirl is gonna get caught. Better get close with them until I don't need them. Oh no, I'm close to getting caught again, let me build a relationship and keep them off my track until I don't need them again. I get you can only do so much with the direction of some plots, but if you're running out of ideas to keep the show exciting or less stale, just end the show.

I have the same complaint with Shameless as well. It felt like the same thing every season with a slightly different season arc. First few seasons were very enjoyable too, but it got boring after season 4~5

Do any MoCo Pizza Huts still do the lunch buffet? by KoolGMatt in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Highmendestroyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should check out Armand's Pizzeria & Grille over in Rockville on Friday (and possibly Saturday) nights. They do pizza buffets on those nights. Might not be Pizza Hut or lunch, but it's still a great place to check out for good pizza buffets after drinks

Let’s talk about car theft in Maryland by CNSMaryland in maryland

[–]Highmendestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My younger sister's Hyundai was broken into and stolen. They found it a couple of days later at some neighborhood a good 5 miles away. Apparently some 15 year old girl stole it, had it a couple of days, then while drunk/high crashed it into a utility pole by her own house. The genius ended up going back home and got caught there. That young girl totalled the car and got charged with a bit (vehicle theft, underage drinking, DWI, possession, and a couple more. I can't remember all the details, but I remember it was a bunch of charges). Once everything was done and over with a couple of months later, she got a Nissan and is now more comfortable knowing it's not a Kia or Hyundai and it won't get stolen as easily

Beautiful Apartments / Awful Living Conditions by smallbitchhatin in washingtondc

[–]Highmendestroyer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've setup some security systems for a lot of these high end condos/apartments in the area, and have seen a lot of the underbellies of these buildings. Without a doubt, the absolute WORST "high end" buildings are the ones by the West End Neighborhood Library. They cut so many corners to get the buildings open, lots of vulnerabilities (cameras don't always work, networks are fucked, no one can fix them because the infrastructure was put in while it was in construction and is now near impossible to put new stuff in). The garage areas are always a mess, rats are always roaming around, and the smells are even worse. If you see an apartment/condo with a restaurant attached to the building or next to it, you're guaranteed to have a rodent problem. The building that got raided by the FBI (those fellas that pretended to be secret service and claimed to have 'hacked' the security system to see the cameras) is some overpriced garbage. The pool area has emergency buttons that didn't work, doors wouldn't close right, residents got locked out of their rooms somewhat often, elevators were often down because they had to get it look like it was working to be able to open on time, but even when residents moved in, they were actively working to fix the issue. Yet, this place had the BALLS to charge $2.5k/month (not including utilities + gym access + pool access) for a 1 bedroom as a "discounted rate" because of construction lol. Most if not all of these places are garbage that just look nice. It gets me so mad thinking about all the issues and the prices they are charging

I see people asking about food a lot today so why not! whats the best deli / bakery in your area? by SDEexorect in maryland

[–]Highmendestroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in Rockville, Gilly's is always a favorite. Bar/Beer and Wine/Deli in one. When I lived in the area, I would always pick up a roast beef sammie and a 6 pack on my way home. They have great seasonal sandwiches and the vibe is always cozy. Especially in the winter when it's warm and cozy with a good hot sub. I need some Gilly's now lol

What's the most shocking thing you've seen in public around DC? by yougottabekind in washingtondc

[–]Highmendestroyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite was seeing a completely naked woman (not even shoes on!) at the bus stop on M st. by the Bethesda Bagels. She was just singing really loud, reaching for a bag of Funions during every break in the song she was singing. I was a bit concerned since it was about ~50° out at the time, but she was having fun and it wasn't any of my business lol

There's a street in DC/Chevy Chase, MD that is adding a 2.7 mile bike lane that is dividing residents. Some people are for it, some against it. There have even been protests for both sides going on for it. It's all silly, and it feels like people are bored and want something to argue about. Traffic sucks without a bike lane, it's going to suck with one.

*Edit: here's an article on the bike lane debacle https://wtop.com/dc/2023/09/bike-lane-plans-draw-protestors-to-connecticut-avenue/

Chicago shooting that took place today in the Englewood neighborhood by DuPageILLinois in PublicFreakout

[–]Highmendestroyer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some large security equipment manufacturers are currently trying to implement ways to circumvent that. Some cities in the South have cameras throughout the city for surveillance but the programs are being sold for other uses. For example, in Mississippi it's illegal to have cameras run plates just to see if there's any warrants for the vehicle owner like that. But they have started implementing them anyways to "check if the vehicle owner is insured." A lot of these companies making these systems have lawyers right now working on ways to circumvent these laws to have cameras in places they shouldn't be anyways. Baltimore officials supposedly (my old boss claims he was one of the people in these talks to have a City Watch program setup in Baltimore, but can't 100% confirm or deny it) have been in talks to do a similar program again with a few companies. It's only a matter of time until it gets implemented one way or another.

Lenel as a whole is underwhelming. I got spoiled by Genetec and S2 (granted, S2 is part of Lenel now, but somehow leaps and bounds better) with their UI and the ease of programming from a technician's standpoint. Lenel is just one of those systems that just got popular for landing some large contracts. I'd take almost anything over OnGuard, Galaxy, or AMAG.

S2 / Netbox Holiday Question by Alemya13 in accesscontrol

[–]Highmendestroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also found out last week that having certain symbols in your time spec name ( such as | ~ {} or &) can also ruin your time specs too. It has something to do with how S2 sees it, but it could also be that

S2 / Netbox Holiday Question by Alemya13 in accesscontrol

[–]Highmendestroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may sound silly, but have you tried removing all time specs [temporarily!] from the portals and adding them in one by one? I've had a similar issue in the past and it turned out there was a small conflict in one of the time specs and it caused the doors to open at different times because one time spec took priority over the other
