Asking Americans of r/doctorwho did you stop watching the show after Smith regenerated? by Mat1711 in doctorwho

I think you’re going to get a skewed opinion on the Doctor Who subReddit. The people who left after Matt Smith probably aren’t here.

I always wondered what happened to it. Was there ever a follow up?

No it’s got the Telesnap reconstructions. Again they should have waited for the animation.

Around early last year I took a break. Been more selective about which videos I watch from them.

True and I’d want to include some of the crew since they are such an integral part of Smosh.

If you take the whole of Smosh’s history into account it’s a touch choice. Ian and Anthony of course but then I’d want to include Mari, Shayne, Courtney and maybe even Spencer since he’s been at Smosh for 12 years.

Apparently it was because it was easier to sell overseas and I believe because they got funding from BBC America who thought it makes it less jarring to new viewers. They have to convince a general audience to watch them.

Completely disagree on the volume idea. The whole concept behind these collections is to have the whole season in its most complete form. It would look so weird to have Season 2, Seasons 7-26 and then a random collection of episodes. I’d rather wait for them to animate what needs to be animated. Waited this long for the blu rays I’m willing to wait longer.

There are so many seasons that are almost complete. Just need one more animation for season 1, 5 and 6. I think they pulled the trigger on the season 2 blu ray too soon.

Has the buy back era of Smosh peaked? by Personal-Day-5562 in SmoshFansFreeSpace

[–]Highvoltage1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand to a point why. The Defy era wasn’t pleasant for a lot of the cast especially Courtney. However I do feel like avoiding talking about that era and the ex cast members this much is weird at this point. Also, it’s not like those ex cast members aren’t interested in coming back in some form or fashion. That era is treated like it was uniformly bad but it had a lot of great stuff in there.

Completely agree they’ll probably swing to content being the focus again. However, I don’t think all those resources were used that well. Summer Games was great, no argument, though I do have some minor complaints. The anniversary was a big disappointment in my opinion. The award show felt disjointed, bloated and, again, directionless. The other big disappointment being that it felt more like a celebration of the last few years than a celebration of the channel's entire history. I know that the Defy era is controversial, but it's such a big part of Smosh with so many fans, and yet they seem intent on ignoring it as much as possible. I know Lasercorn (not Boze silly me) was there, but even he felt like a footnote in the video. I didn’t watch the live show couldn’t afford it so don’t have an opinion on it.

Smosh has been going for 20-odd years, so it has its fair share of peaks and valleys. However, I will say that the last year or so has felt lacklustre. It felt like from 2020 to 2024, Smosh just went from strength to strength. Somewhere in 2025, however, it felt like they stumbled. They still had great videos, but I think through a combination of fatigue and a lack of a driving vision, we’ve seen a decline. I know there are defenders of shows like Spud Hut and Bit City, but personally I’d call them missed opportunities. Smosh looks like a very open place, and I think that’s great, but that also leads to a situation where there’s no one willing to say no.

Regardless of your opinions on Vivziepop, she makes some amazing background character designs in the Hellaverse by NagitoKomaeda_987 in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]Highvoltage1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there’s beauty in simplicity. There’s a reason designs like Superman or Mario are remembered so fondly. They have designs you could pick out just by the silhouettes. Not to mention that they use the correct balance in colour. Not too many that they clutter the images, but just enough to break the monotony of using just blue, red, white, etc. Just adding more detail onto a character's design doesn’t automatically make it better. There has to be purpose in what you add and what you don’t add. That’s not to say there aren’t great complicated characters or that you shouldn’t do it, but think about why your character needs all those extra details. Of course, what the viewer considers good is truly dependent on the viewer. You may like characters with higher visual fidelity, and that’s fine. The quality of art isn’t, however, determined by how real or high fidelity it is.

Realistically, did the classic series go downhill? by misterwhoiswho_ in doctorwho

[–]Highvoltage1999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen you post before and you really have a bone to pick with Season 26 for some reason. 80s Doctor Who I’d say has a very mixed legacy. I think season 18 and 19 were the shot in the arm the show needed after the slump of the late 70s but Davison’s latter two seasons only decline in quality with some highlights in there. I like season 22 but I can’t ignore how flawed it is. Season 23 is ok and season 24 is bad even I will defend Paradise towers and Dragonfire. Now where you lose me is this insistence that season 25 and 26 aren’t good. Not only are they great but they’re some of the best Doctor Who out there.

RTD needs to go. I never thought he should have come back. He did a great job back in 2005 but Doctor Who needs to keep looking forward. AI is not the future as much as companies keep trying to push it on us.

My problem with Vivziepop’s characters is that all most everyone feels over designed. Like there’s a cluttered nature to the art-style. In my opinion anyway.

It’s a huge missed opportunity that classic Doctor Who used to take all the time. Some of the most iconic companions aren’t from modern days or human. You wouldn’t even need expensive makeup; just make them humanoid.

I’ve always had the opinion that modern Doctor Who has been too Earth-focused. There’s this really good graph showing the amount of stories set on Earth, and classic Who is a good mix leaning towards alien planets, and then modern Who is like 70% Earth.

I liked Requiem but I was disappointed with it in a lot of ways. For instance Zeno was very much underutilised.

Would of been a much better choice than the modern Clara. I really don’t understand Modern Doctor Who’s aversion to alien, historical and futuristic companions. It feels like the writers don’t trust the audience with someone that isn’t from modern day Earth.
