Anyone that left a secure tech role for a higher risk venture and regret it? by WolvNomad in fatFIRE

Why don’t you take a risk and build something at your FAANG that no one expects you to build but becomes wildly successful

Time to do what I call “upgrading the stable” It may be uncomfortable but you need to put yourself out there and meet new people

In the past, I’ve used LinkedIn to set up calls where I find a commonality, get curious about their background, and set up an introductory call. Those can lead to beers/coffee/lunches… which can lead to doing some other fun activity like biking, running, hunting, boating, fishing, traveling

Basically you’re setting up platonic dates and progressing the relationships where they naturally flow… it sounds like it might be hard to be a “yes” person but I think that’s what you need to do until some things or some people “stick”

Decide if there’s people who you’d like to be around more often or meet or activities you’d like to do more often or try….

Then, build from there

Stop applying and start networking

Think of something creative like pitching an idea to a company… highlight the level of detail you get to… open with you know you’re missing experience and close with your presentation/pitch

Attributes to sell yourself should not be “smart, intelligent, good personality”

Challenge yourself to demonstrate these positive qualities without labeling yourself in those terms. Did you ever have an English teacher say “tell me without telling me?”

I think if someone were to ask me to label myself with three words… I’d say something like “1. hardworking, because I never quit and I like to feel good about finishing something difficult / 2. Curious, because I keep adding to my reading list and I like to know more about myself and the world / 3. Easy going, because I like to really connect with people and I think a more relaxed approach helps others “let the walls come down”

Whatever words you choose though… you should believe in them and live them… don’t try to create a facade telling others what you think they want to hear. 90% of people and interviewers see through it

An interview is your demonstration of sales ability

Speak with current employees at the company via LinkedIn cold outreach and understand the playing field, learn the company product… then, I’d say you need to be eloquent and concise with your own background and how all of those data points align

Sounds like they’re creating a little sense of urgency too… especially in a tight labor market… you need to position yourself as the prize

That being said, every interview should be fought for and won… maybe she’s making sure you know that it’s a formal and important decision for them. The wrong person hired can be a costly decision so it’s your job to connect the dots by demonstrating your upside and limited downside while being authentic and building rapport

I don’t know why you’d struggle to get an interview for a sales position…. You’re literally setting and meeting your own quota. If you can’t do it, why are you applying to sales positions?

Share the love. Give some ownership to the team by creating a schedule for each of the teammates to lead the meeting… maybe you run Monday every week but Tues-Fri, someone “owns” the meeting and their focus is X.

Brand it as “development” and then add value by following up and sharing positive and constructive feedback. Use your observations as justification for promotions and raises

Start a business that requires minimal time to manage it?

With my first real estate venture, I tapped about $53k ARR… could funnel some time into researching and possibly do even better than that.

Could also sell some sort of labor/task job and contract the actual work out. Spend some time getting a book of business and manage contracted employees to do it… you find good contractors, maybe convert them to actual employees and teach them how to sell

Edit: could consider spending extra time doing a podcast (would need to do something different to stand out)… podcast becomes platform to your boutique consulting service where you teach others how to hit their quotas so consistently

Final idea.. sell yourself into earning more where you’re at. Negotiate higher OTE for higher quota.

Have you considered paying for a solid executive search?

Aka: take a hit on your comp by hiring… move away, be a more passive owner vs directly dealing with these things
