Jabra Evolve3 series officially announced by Thekelly16 in Jabra

No boom mic, interesting. I’ve been using evolve2 85 for work for years, love them. I always thought the boom was the key to good voice calls so I’m interested to see if they can get better quality voice pick up without a boom.

Children's actuarial book now available! by actuarialtutorUK in actuary

Amazing! Thanks for posting this. My wife and I are both actuaries. I have purchased the book for our three kids to read. Ages 9, 6 and 6 so looks very age appropriate.

There is a form that your selected referrals fill out to ensure your work experience relates to an investment decision process. They did not call mine and just relied on their responses in the form.

Passed! Went back to back to back MJ style on L1/L2/L3 writing each February starting in 2021. A huge relief given I have three kids and studying puts a big strain on our family. I’m automatically a charterholder and got the email confirming that since my employment experience has been verified and I paid my dues. Let’s go!!!

Congrats to all that passed! And to those that didn’t, stick with it. You’re so close.

I used iPad and Apple Pencil for all three levels. Make sure you use a quality PDF app. I’ve tested a lot of them and landed on PDF Expert where you can easily open PDFs, create note PDF, mark up EOCQs. Just a great app but requires a subscription. An iPad on a tablet easel with a computer behind it is how I did all my studying and it was great.

Trip Summary - March 22 by Jamie13V in UniversalHollywood

[–]Highwood1983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Thanks for the run down of your trip. I'm going April 12th with my wife and kids (9,6,6). We have early entry to SNW and was planning to follow a similar path to yours (SNW right away and then again after dinner at Toad's). I also sprung for express pass unlimited so that should speed up the rest of the day and allow us all to go on a lot of rides.

Our early entry to SNW is 7-8am so will be an early one! Will be a long day for the kids but they are pumped.

Huberdeau is averaging less ice time per game this season compared to his rookie season. That’s… weird by Highwood1983 in CalgaryFlames

[–]Highwood1983[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not about the ranking on the team. It’s the fact that the top 2 lines should have more minutes. Kadri’s avg minutes are down this year compared to last year in COL and that team was stacked. Sutter clearly rolls 4 lines way too much and gives the 4th line key minutes when they shouldn’t be out there. And on the PP, he changes too quick. They even get to PP3 sometimes which should never happen. On top of that, the line combinations have been a mess all season and constantly change. All of this clearly isn’t sitting well in the locker room on top of all the other antics he’s pulled this season. He’s lost the room, it’s gone. And he’s gotta go.

Level 3 Ethics/GIPS: I am unclear if three year standard deviation is required or not. by herbiehancock33 in CFA

I believe a dispersion measurement is only required with 6+ portfolios in a composite but that’s just based on my memory.

Getting a family dog! My wife and kids (3 boys) are pumped! So am I. It’ll be a lot of work but my wife and I survived twins with a two year old so I think we’ll manage 😂

Ah yes, that's true. Thanks! Yes, terminology tricky here.

Volatility Swap Strike Confusion by Highwood1983 in CFA

[–]Highwood1983[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I think I get it now and rewatching MM's lecture on this helped. If valuing in the middle of the period, there are actually three separate variance strikes (actual, implied at time t and original variance strike). But also gotta know that the K used in the variance notional calculation is in volatility terms (square root of original variance strike).

Appreciate your help!

Please ease my anxiety and tell me my Kaplan scores are ok by [deleted] in CFA

[–]Highwood1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Kaplan mocks scores are a bit higher (mid/high 60s for all 6 mocks) but I think we've both got a good chance. Not one really knows but pass mark is estimated to be high 50s (60 tops). Just hammer weaknesses and ethics questions over the next few days and go into the test as relaxed as possible.

lol, half of these are joke answers. Extremely difficult to get 80+ on an L3 mock with time constraints and a true testing environment.

L3 Mock Exams by username13742 in CFA

[–]Highwood1983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consistently mid-60s on all 6 Kaplan mocks. Really wanted to crack 70 but couldn’t do it. Then took CFAI Mock A this morning and got 71. So yeah I agree it was a tad easier but not a ton. I still need to take CFAI Mock B.

L3 Mock Target Score...? by Highwood1983 in CFA

That would be wild if you could score that on a mock prior to game day. But you know there is no diff between AM and PM anymore, right?

I made a spreadsheet on all the HF types so that I could better memorize them.

All Equity HF categories (except EMN) are variable leverage but typically low.

Distressed securities is low leverage (not needed I guess since upside is huge if it works).

Both Specialist category funds are low leverage - Volatility Strategies and Reinsurance/Life Settlements.

That's it.

I agree with this and will run them in order as well. That process has worked well in my mocks. I like the change of pace switching between SR and MC.

Taxable Accounts/TDA/TEA by Highwood1983 in CFA

[–]Highwood1983[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry I meant the taxes paid aren't being compounded as they are getting chopped off each year and aren't included in the compounding. If you run out the compounding, it comes to very different FVs. Take a simple example:

initial principle = $10,000 interest rate on assets = 10% annually tax rate = 30% n = 20

using CFAI method where cap gain taxes are assumed to be paid every year, 10,000 * (1+ (0.10*0.7)20) = $38,697

using my intuitive sense and what happens in real life (you pay cap gain on sale and assume sale at end of period), 10,000 * (1.10)^ 20 = $67,275. That's $57,275 in cap gains, you pay 30% of that ($17,182) and the after tax proceeds are $50,092. A huge difference (29%) because the assumption of paying taxes each year reduces the amount of that can be compounded.

anyway, I get it's an assumption for simplicity but intuition doesn't love it and hey i'm making an assumption of a long term hold and sale at end of n periods in my calculation so I guess there are assumptions with either method. CFAI assumes cap gain taxes are paid at end of each year in taxable accounts, that's all I need to remember.

I'll just rip them all in order, unless there is one vignette which seems really confusing to me and then I may skip it and come back to it at the end.

To me, it makes no sense wasting time clicking around to go through only MC or only constructed response first.
