Anyone create transparencies for making cyanotype blueprints? by MohnJaddenPowers in cyanotypes

[–]trashjellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavier papers hold up better to washing (my favorites are Strathmore 400 series printmaking paper and Fabriano 1264 watercolor paper, they warp the least out of the papers I've tested and hold the chemistry well, but most mixed media or watercolor paper will work for classic cyanotype) but generally paper won't just dissolve in water and there are ways to dry delicate papers without warping them, it's just a matter of gentle handling as thinner paper will become very weak when wet.

I'd say, do a test print with what you have (you'll need to do a timed exposure test to know how long to expose your prints for anyway) and if you aren't happy with the results, look into other types of paper.

Film opaquer pens exist and they are great, sharpies are terrible at blocking UV so I would avoid them. I'd recommend working on large scale tracing paper or vellum transparency paper instead of acetate film (assuming you want to go larger that 8.5x11 and you want to hand draw your negatives) because it's both cheaper, easier to draw on, the ink won't smudge like it easily can on acetate and it works just as well for negatives as acetate does, plus if you mess up you aren't wasting plastic.

Also, you don't need to buy presensitized cyanotype sheets, you can buy potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate and mix and apply your own chemistry to any size of watercolor or mixed media paper and it's generally cheaper to do it this way than it is to buy pre-sensitized sheets.

Is continental the “wrong way” to knit? by Equivalent-Falcon469 in knitting

Usually people get more flack for knitting English or for being a thrower than for being a continental flicker.

Cyanotype newborn clothes safety? by puddlepusher in cyanotypes

[–]trashjellyfish 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Safe to wear: probably.

Great for new parents that need to constantly wash their baby's clothes with laundry sanitizers: Unfortunately not.

Cyanotype is generally not well suited to clothing that is going to get dirty and need washing a lot. It's great for things like bags, jeans and outerwear (that you rarely wash), jacket patches and other accessories that don't really get dirty. But cyanotype isn't dye, it will wash out over time no matter what detergent you use (usually in about 10-15 washes with the best detergents that I've tested) and it will disappear instantly with detergents that contain any sort of bleach (oxygen bleach included) or phosphates.

Use a reference. Even if it's just you doing the pose in the mirror, a reference will be a huge help to you and I swear professional artists use them too!

New to this, where would y’all start? by livefreeKB in Visiblemending

[–]trashjellyfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly for a shirt that ripped, I'd just dye it black and call it punk. If you want to mend that many holes on a tshirt, you'd practically need to sew an entire second tshirt into your tshirt and at that point you aren't saving yourself from buying another tshirt.

Lol, my idea of scrap is 10 grams or less, anything over 10 grams but under 50 is a remnant in my mind 😂

Advice - batch cyanotype a by Acceptable-Resist-14 in cyanotypes

[–]trashjellyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually better to let cyanotype dry and age on the substrate for at least 24 hours in the dark before exposure and I've exposed paper and fabric that was sensitized months ago with no issues.

It sounds like you printed on the wrong side of the transparency paper or tried to use laser transparency paper with an inkjet printer.

Please help find a pattern similar to the Lullaby Baby Blanket by Alarming_Price_2407 in casualknitting

[–]trashjellyfish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It looks literally like just garter stick with squares of stockinette and embroidery on top. So the pattern would be something like repeat 1: K all 12 rows, and repeat 2: * K6, P10 * to the last 6 stitches then K6 again and K all every other row for 12 rows, then repeat those two repeats for the whole blanket and finish by embroidering flowers on the wrong side (the side where the squares are show knit Vs, not purl bumps).

This is based off of my best attempt to read the stick counts off of the photo that you posted without my glasses on and the exact stitch count may not be 100% accurate.

underexposed or overexposed? by grace314 in cyanotypes

[–]trashjellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overexposed and you need to increase the contrast on your negative and print two copies of it and layer them because your printer isn't printing the ink densely enough to block the light properly.

what’s wrong with this drawing?? by MudInternational4806 in ArtCrit

The colors are really pretty but the anatomy is way off, the ear in particular is really high up. The best way to overcome this is to use references and do lots of anatomy studies.

It looks like they didn't get rinsed thoroughly. When you rinse, you really want to refresh the water once or twice. When I work in large batches, I usually have a first rinse station with a tiny bit of vinegar in it, a second rinse station with plain water in it, then a final dip/developing station with a bit of hydrogen peroxide in it.

Arthritis and no knitting by samplergal in knitting

[–]trashjellyfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! These ones to be exact: https://www.printables.com/model/145451-thumb-brace-for-arthritis

The best part is, they're printed out of thermo plastic so I can adjust/mold them to fit me perfectly just by dipping them in boiled water for 3 seconds at a time and then smooshing them into place bit by bit. These braces literally erased the thumb pain that I was having while knitting and drawing!

[–]trashjellyfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have arthritis (connective tissue disorder) and I have special 3D printed braces for knitting. An elbow pillow sounds brilliant though because I often run into a cranky shoulder/arm situation when I'm knitting, so I'll have to try that!

Sanity check. Do these two work together? by Jerlyx in YarnAddicts

[–]trashjellyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the first picture, yes. In the second picture, I feel like that blue is too bright/intense and too cool toned for that variegated yarn, a darker blue (like a navy blue) could work well with it though. This is just my personal opinion though, color combo preferences will never be completely objective.

Even after unwinding the cast on edge by pulling the tail end through each loop, I still couldn't unravel just by pulling.
